Hi,

I read a bit on here and asked in another thread a while ago but didn't get more information about the suspension. My FL has now 140k mi on the clock and it started some on side roads or in a roundabout it feels if I'd drive a Citroen 2CV and would fall over. I was wondering if the shock absorbers are done. I talked to LR in DE and that guy said they would still be ok and today we went to our local garage for my wife's car so I took the opportunity and asked that guy. He checked and said he couldn't find anything. He checked as for MOT. When I told him about the above he said yes it might not show any signs from outside but you never know how it looks inside. He also said they look if being the original ones.

Read a bit about someone mentioned that after 60k mi they would usually be good for renewal. After that I think it would be time as driving is no fun really anymore, but on one thread from today it read that it could also be the lower strut bearings or wisbone bushes etc.

Had a quick look into it and took some pics.

As the guy from the garage said was leaking, loose or otherwise looking not normal should i go for the shocks first? Which ones would recommend if that's the case? I found some on island 4x4 from britparts but am not sure if these are good for 34£RH Front Damper Assy Non Sports Suspension From 1A336548 RSC000040 Island 4x4 - Specialists in Land Rover and Range Rover Parts and accessories for all models. UK and worldwide mail order. .

mine are still the original ones and 230k km done and still OK. might be worth taking a look at the anti roll bar bushes.

have you tried doing the roundabouts a bit slower? remember it is a Land Rover...
 
Mine are softer now at 41K miles than they were at 30K miles. Replacing them will improve the feel of the car. Don't forget that all the bushes need changing to.

Is there a poly bush kit available?

Mine at 127,000 miles feels like it might be about time to do something. But maybe just get away with the lower suspension bushes.

shockers dont hold car up ,they just damp bounce, the springs do
 
Are the Britpart ones okay? They are soooo much cheaper than polybush ones.

From what I've seen, all polyurethane bushes are much the same in quality. The hardness (shore) varies a bit between brands. Many suppliers don't quote the harness of the bushes anyway.
In general, polyurethane bushes transmit more road noise into the cabin. The do locate the suspension components more securely. This helps maintain suspension geometry under load. Maintaining suspension geometry on a high riding 4X4 isn't the main reason to fit poly Imho. However longer life and ease of replacement is.
As with everything in life, there are benefits and trade offs for both types of bush.

ok will check these bushes, thanks. Thought the guy from the garage checked them with the shocks. Will ask him about. Is there anything other manufacturer then Britpart or LR out, couldn't find really another Brand I'd know.

Yes it might be to drive more slowly in the roundabouts :), but that just started a bit ago. I think it was when we went to an exhibition and I had to park on the green outside which wasn't very even. If i.e. I am turning the car and go up on a green then it's like a hiss or swoosh, very slow but yes.

Could that also the reason for my extended tracking I need it quite often.

Yes, I know, thanks. Did I say that, maybe I got it wrong somewhere in between then. The car looks to me at least the front same heights. The rear I am not sure. Maybe I can a pic during the day.

Are there any kits to buy apart from the Britpart ones? The Britpart on island4x4 show the anti-rollbar bushes are only up to 2000 modells. couldn't find anything on ebay as well, yet. maybe amazon has anything in their program.

If the bushes are originals, they will be past there best. The shocks will be soft too. The original shocks were made by Delphi, if that helps in your quest.
 
At 166k the rears on mine have gone super soft and will be replaced shortly. I did the fronts at 150 as one lost all it's absorbing ability on day after hitting a pot hole. 150k on original is not bad if you ask me :)

I think I read somewhere around here the sachs ones would be a bit bette than the Monroe for some reason, but couldn't figure out which ones, if that super touring or which.

I managed to get new ones from LR, think Delphi? You can really feel the difference front to back now so I will change the back shortly. Will likely just get OE standard as they last well.

If I had the money and used the car more than the missus I would have fitted the 2 inch plus Monroe kit :)
 
The quick way to check your suspension is to push each corner of the car down then release, if it bounces more than twice your shocks are on the way out. But this is a very crude test.
Get under the car and give everything a good pull and push to test for excessive play. Have a good look at all the bushes for cracks and perishing.
Wouldn't touch the britpart shocks, their stuff isn't very good. If you can afford them Island 4x4 do Monroe shocks which are excellent. If not original landrover are a good choice.
Also check your springs for cracks.

Ok will go underneath today and see about the bushes. The guy from the garage said they would be ok but from what I saw the other day some looked a bit cracked. Wasn't sure really about if the Britpart would be the best, so better either Delphi, Monroe, Sachs.

Thanks Nodge68, tried to find a test about all three but nothing found really yet.

In case I don't take the delphi wpuld I need to change the springs as well?

You may aswel replace the drop links at the same time :). You will likely kill them getting them off anyway
