Disco 2 Surprise surprise...oil leak. Quick question.

I have a small drip of oil that collects at the bottom of the bell housing. I have recently replaced the rocker/cam cover gasket, but the top part of the back of the engine is still a bit wet, as is the top of the bell housing. On inspecting the inside of the bell housing the back plate on the engine also has traces of oil on it.

So, my question is, can the oil leak from the top of the engine find its way inside the bell housing and run down the back plate on the engine, or do I have a leak from the crank shaft oil seal, as well as the rocker gasket?

When I renewed the rocker gasket, I used a Britpart one, so I will get a genuine Land Rover one I think.

Quick question. When you replaced the cam cover seal did you feel round the back of it (the gap between the cover and the bulkhead)?
Its dead easy to catch the semi circular part of the seal as you put the cover back on, it twists the seal inwards.
You can easily feel if its in place by running your fingers over the area where that part of the seal is.

Thanks. Yeah, the seal is correctly seated, and I used some gasket sealer to hold it in place too. Think I'll remove it, thoroughly clean it and replace with a genuine gasket.

I guess the only way to be sure that's where the oil is coming from, is to ensure that's sorted, and the drip stops forming on the bottom of the bell housing.

Strange that it leaks with the seal in place ok. All the little rubber seals in place?
Is the breather pipe is clear?

To be honest, it's very difficult to feel around with or see much at the back of the engine, but it's definitely a bit wet around there. Seals in place. It's not leaving big puddles on the bell housing, like pictures I've seen of some. I've got a new gasket, and some sealer, so I will strip it tomorrow, check breather etc, and refit with the new gasket. Fingers crossed.

Most of the time even the genuine seals weep, best to glue the bugger on top and bottom with RTV - also replace the gromet's that hold the lid down.

Replaced gasket earlier today, and as recommend I used sealer on the gasket, top and bottom. Been on a 20 mile run, and all dry. Still a little drip on the bottom of the bell housing though, and I cleaned it all off before hand, but it seems to be less than before, so time will tell. I guess they'll still be some residual oil to run down. Fingers crossed.
