Ive just had a chat with my builder and joiner about a problem he was having with his Iveco truck and the topic of fuel came up. The builder who does some truck driving course every so often, not HGV but something more than a normal car test says its also been discussed on the course that supermarket fuel isnt as good as branded fuel (shell, bp etc). He lives close to a BP near me and says he consistently see's Tesco and ASDA fuel tankers filling up there.

Also has a friend who did a back to back fuel economy test with his vehicle and got 80 miles more out of a full tank using branded fuel than supermarket fuel. I think that 80 seems a bit excessive and may be the old pub story growing arms and legs but is the concept right.

Does anyone know if there is any truth in this?

They were saying supermarket diesel doesnt have detergents in so doesnt keep injectors etc clean and also has a higher wax content and lower octane rating.

I am sorry to those senior members who get upset and will now be mid feel turn and explode because another newbie has not done a search. I have since done a search and found the mixed answers I didnt want. Im sorry I have been so stupid and inconsiderate.....not...........

If there is an administrator on here feel free to bin this whole post.

Dont take it to heart. You arent the first - or will be the last. Just have aread (for what its worth) and move on to the next Q (but try & search first) :).

Wind yer neck back in mate eh! :D

tis bollicks,
for a start, deisel is Cetane, not octane that counts.
second, will it really make a difference on a fender (or any landy tbh)?
80mpg, really, whats he driving????

unless you want to to a long term test, ie 1000 miles of each, tank to tank can vary loads anyway,

I'll stick with me bio...

Well, just to throw another spanner in the works.!

When I had low mpg with my Freelander I thought I'd do some tests using the car I drive every day - my company Volvo V70 - before I started spending my own money on 'better' fuels.

I did brim to brim at least 15 times and having gotten the tank as low as I dared.

Result.......absolutely none. Nil. Zilch. Nowt.

Not even using Premium diesel. All makes, all grades, all outlets.

I used to do 100k a year but due to a change in working practices I only do around 70k a year now.

If I used supermarket fuel in my truck it felt like I was towing a car at all times and I got about 50-80 less to the tank (120 lite tank).

Since we switched over to a rubbish fuel card at work (most of our fuel is now supermarket) we've had a lot of our vehicles start playing up and needing new ip's and injectors.

Once the supermarkets pulled out of the fuel card deal the problems with our trucks suddenly ceased.

I've come across supermarket petrol that won't ignite with a naked flame. Summit tells me that isn't normal. I'll happily put supermarket fuel in my works vehicle but I won't let it go in my own vehicles fuel tanks.

Never owned a diesel so can only say about petrol. But after a full 20 car test yes that's 20 of us using different fuels we came to the conclusion that branded fuels where cleaner but you would have to-do 20k plus to make a difference and the odd tank of branded and a good blast of power 2 or 3 times cleaned the **** out.
Branded does improve bhp though due to higher octane but has no relevance to diesel.

Like I said - another spanner. All I can say is that I saw absolutely no difference in performance or mpg. Tested over about 7500 miles so no comment on the longer term engine issues.

Guess this is one that will run on for quite some time yet.
