Its getting to that time of year when after a good summer we get to find out the Disco is no longer watertight. A fter 3 stripdowns of my rear sunroof I thought I would do a post to help others hopefully get it right first time.

Before you make a start make sure your hands are clean and keep them clean it will save you valeting the headliner when you have finished.

Rear Sunroof removal
Fold forward rear seats to give larger working area.

Tools required 17mm socket for rear seatbet
small torx (short ones are better) on 1/4 drive ratchet for access
phillips screwdriver
trim button remover (not really needed)
Black sealant Sikaflex marine or similar
Gutter sealant or sink sealing tape

I can do this whole job in 2-3 hours, first time it took a whole day

What follows is not the land rover way and care is needed to avoid damage to sunroof or headlining.

1 Remove trim from sunroof apature

2 Position sunroof handle to remove tension and sunroof is just closed and remove handle

3 Remove headlining screw just forward of handle

4 Remove rear pillar speakers and release plastic pillar tops both sides

5 Remove seatbelt top both sides

6 Remove both plastic rooflight panels by carefully pulling down and inwards

7 now the rear of the headlining should be held up by a channel at rear

8 Remove drains from inner channel. Now with care working above headlining remove the opening mechaism and the 14 torx screws from inner channel. The hadlining can be lowered at rear to gain better access take care not to distort it too much.

9 remove inner channel

10 lift outer sunroof clear and then remove glass (do not move glass runners as sunroof operation may be impaired if you move one side more than the other.

11 Still working on outer part remove rubber seal and clean both seal and its groove. Inspect seal if damaged renew ( mine was ok).

12 run bead of Sikaflex in seal groove and carefully re seat rubber seal

13 clean car roof and mating part of outer sunroof

14 now for the inner channel inspect carefully and clean. I sealed up some unused holes and where the sunblind fixing clips fitted. Sometimes the drain tube fixings are leaking inspect and re seal if needed.

15 refit sunroof outer using new sink tape or a thin bead of gutter mastic to seal between sunroof and body.

16 reassemle all above in reverse order taking care and fitting glass to sunroof lastof all. Ajustmment of glass can be a bit fiddly but patience will pay off here.

17 leave the whole lot at least 24 hours to cure before driving dsco.

18 I tested mine with a hosepipe for 20 mins and all was ok and has remained so in the recent downpours.

After lots of rain the sunroof remains watwertight and the interior is finally bone dry again.
A after bit of work to get it right but satisfying having achieved a result.
If you follow the above post theres no reason not to DIY.

My rear roof was leaking, but between the glass and seal as it seems that one of the cables has stretched and one side does not tighten down properly unless you bring the handle past the closed position.
I'm afraid that due to lack of time to do anything about it and a lack of funds to get it sorted properly I had to give in and run a thin bead of silicone round the seal and close the roof down onto it.
Dry as a bone now and as I never used the rear roof anyway it's not a big problem..........
