ok found where at least one of the oil leaks is coming from. some of the sump bolts were not tight along with a few other bits around the engine (looks like someone had it in bits before i got my hands on it).
i know the damper and one of the steering rods have to be disconnected but do i have to lift the body to give space between the sump and the axle to get the sump out
you may be able to tell i am new to the l/r game
 
i was thinking someone had messed up the sump fit due to the amount of sealant that had been squeezed out when it had been put back
