Can anyone offer any advice regarding replacing the engine in a Range Rover Classic? It currently has a 200tdi fitted, but I'm looking to replace with a 4L Toyota from a Land Cruiser.
Will it fit? What modifications will need to be made?
All help much appreciated.

It stopped running after a van hit the Range Rover, front nearside. Took months sat in repair yard while trying to sort insurance out. Was told main bearing has gone, and engine has now seized.
I have been told by many others that the engine probably isn't seized, but the guy involved was trying to sell me a replacment engine for £1500. I had to get a truck to pick it up and bring it home as he never bothered to do authorised body repairs either. My cheapest option is to replace engine with an alternative.

Where are you located, reason I ask is because the 200 tdi engine is very repairable and simple, any engine conversion involves lots of messing around and teething troubles not to mention insurance hassle.Unless you live in Outer Mongolia I'd stick to the Tdi.

I'm located in Colne, East Lancashire. You are more or less confirming what I have been told by loads of other Range Rover people. You've made my decision for me, I'm going to have to get the engine out and look at it, then take it from there. Thanks very much for your help.

stick to the 200tdi. lot less hassle and a good engine too.
why not buy a disco or RR mot failure with a decent tdi lump?
you get an engine for less than 500 quid and all them RR spares too.

Engines probably same as Disco was it a retro fit or factory job ? Daughter has an 86 with a tdi which was a kit from Landrover basically a Disco engine and box bolted to the RR transfer box. Mighty fine machine and very economical.

I had a clasic for 8 years which had the fantastic 3.5 litre Nissan Turbo Diesel. What an engine, what a car!

Fuel consumption was fantastic and reliability out of this world

It was fitted by a company in the SW somewhere, the engine was already fitted when I bought the car, I believe that they are still available try Exchange and Mart for dealers / fitters
