Sudden loss of power and vibration through vehicle

Driving my silky smooth D1 3.9 today and suddenly I experienced loss of power not getting above 25mph, and car was really vibrating throughout the whole car. It's been driving like a dream until 1pm today. Not overheating and idle is ok, but as soon as I put foot down whole car vibrates. This only happened this afternoon.

Could it be a steering issue (just had alignment done), an air lock(radiator replaced last week), sticking brake pad? Loss of wheel balance weight?

Managed to crawl home. Starts and stops fine, all fluids are as they should be...

Help. This is so unexpected...wife is going beserk....

none of above would give loss of power..what you nean by loss of power?

manual or auto?
 
Check your Dizzy hasn't worked loose and knocked the timing out.
Any mis-firing?
Will it rev in neutral?
 
sounds more like drive train to me..not really the weather to be under motor checking things though!

a vid on you tube would help here..
 
when the vehicle is stationary can you hold the revs at various points in the range with out the engine shaking

A major Ht break down will cause the engine to miss and shake like a ****eing dog, esp under load

You might be on to something there.

To the OP did this suddenly happen when the engine was hot? Is it alright when you first spark it up? It could be the ignition amplifier failing, they are known to misbehave when hot, this could cause an ignition misfire that might explain the vibration and loss of power. HTH
 
Thanks, silly question, but what is the ignition amplifier? Where is it located? Does it go by any other name? Yes engine was hot, had been fine all day, parked it up, went shopping, came back 20 mins later and hey presto it starts to shudder when I drove off.
 
The ignition amplifier is essentially a electronic version of points and condenser and switches the low tension side of the coil to induce the HT spark.

The amplifier is normally attached to the side of the distributor but later engines had a remote amplifier - follow the lead from the side of the dizzy and you should find it.

I have heard them referred to as an ignition module before.

If you are going to swap out the ignition amplifier you'll need to check if it is 3 pin or 2 pin (take it off and have a look) while you're at it, it might be worth checking the pick up resistance too.
 
Went out to my sick Disco last night - started first time after a week or so of no movement but is now idling lumpy. but before it was a smooth idle.

Any ideas?

was going to swap over all possible parts, plugs, leads etc that could be causing it at the weekend.

its the fact it was a sudden change from smooth driving with power, to lumpy with no power or acceleration.

Help. :(
 
Today I changed the plugs HT leads and cleaned the idle control valve, which was gunky and the car turns over but won't fire. Help?
Long haired commandant is getting :mad:
 
One rule i like to stick to if pos is to replace on thing at a time (obviously not one plug at a time ect)
Then you can see if there is any improvement as you go along
And if you replace 10 things at once and it dont start or runs **** you dont know which bits at fault

Its what i do any way, It may or may not help you out in some way
 
Thanks, I did the obvious first, plugs & leads. But it looks like it could be something more complicated, or at least out of my experience range.
