Just for info,if the rubber slot valve under air box is not kept clean water can not drain out.
I found this out when I was caught in a bad storm, engine started stuttering but stopped after rain had gone,on opening up the air box the paper filter was destroyed(pulled inside out).
I'm fitting a k&n type filter so this won't happen again, but will dry oil off first as to protect maf sensor,
Any thoughts

No, this was towing a trailer back to France .
I did notice my right side mud flap had gone, maybe the wheel was throwing water up to the side inlet vent ?

Mines got a circular, rubber valve, on a branch in the air inlet pipe, before it gets to the air box. As well as the rubber birds mouth valve on the box itself.

The rubber tit should be checked for operation from time to time, and replaced if necessary.
Pretty surprised by your issue, I have not heard of an air box being filled up by rain alone before, I have driven in torrential rain with no issues.
Its your motor, but personally I wouldn't fit aftermarket filter, the landrover airbox is designed to remove the dust that is often found in the environments landrovers operate in.

OLDUN. one of the guys who we went with us on a trip to Morocco had a K&N air filter on his Defender. Coming back through Spain without any warning he suffered a major engine failure. Engine completely destroyed. He had to fit a reconditioned engine. The verdict of the cause of the engine failure was the air filter. Apparently they are not so good in dusty environments.
I personally prefer to leave things as standard as possible. My standard Defender filter has been through rivers etc and I have never had a problem. I check the valve when I change the air filter. I can't see why you have a problem. I can only assume you have a snorkel with the air intake at the top facing on coming wind and rain. Perhaps I am missing something here. You should be able to see the cheap crappy snorkel I have in the picture.

I have no snorkel it's a standard td5

Yes I have read story's of this,as I live in a ski resort in the Alps it's cold ,not really dusty, but will change to paper filter in summer just to be safe,it's a quick swop

I can't see how water got in there in the first place. Never heard of this before. Mine is a 1990, 200 tdi. I'm sure some of the other guys who have TD5's will chip in. Think I will keep my 200 TDI, it works in the rain.

Engine damage from a K&N filter not the first time I've heard of this any of those performance filter that allow more air must do the same damage.

How do you get more air - bigger surface area - bigger holes considering the standard paper filters fill the space in the air box well can't see how you can improve the surface area without changing the air box so they must have bigger holes allowing the crap to get through

With the standard air intake on my TD5 I had very intermittent 'missing' whilst driving in heavy rain. Inspecting the air box revealed tide marks and water stains...I have now fitted a proper raised air intake and chucked away the original pipe work. You need to see the standard pipe work fit to appreciate just how pikey it is. Tupperware would be ashamed. Some of the joints between the parts have no seals, no clamps, and huge gaps. No trouble since fitting my RAI.
