Swapped out starter today - bolts bloomin tight - couldn't shift them with a 3/8" setup - ended up making a 'special' from a 8mm allen bit & 5" extension to get the top one, turned down the business end to get better access around the engine mount (mine measured prob could do with being 2mm longer) - 1/2" ratchet assembled onto it once I got it located into the bolt.

Unfortunately - the new starter appears to be dud - spins fine when shorted but the solenoid aint doing anything by way of a click..... 12.5v at main terminal, 12.5v coming in to solenoid connection when key turned - anything else i'm missing before taking it off and sending it back?
 
Thoroughly recommend sacrificing an 1/2" 8mm Allen bit then - took 5 mins to get it out once I'd done that.... no fishing around with extension bars with this - straight up the back of the starter :) just wished it had worked after! :rolleyes:

Was this a used starter or brand new? About a week ago I put a used starter on vgwc the eBay ad said! Two starts later.....click. I usually find the thin solenoid wire it comes from the ecu on a v8 and connect this to the battery. If it turns over it's something else if nothing solenoid kaput. I won't buy used rotating electrics anymore after this. The used was £20 plus £11 shipping the new(not recon) was £63 Inc shipping! Seems to start very easily now tbh. Let's hope it lasts. The solenoids wear badly after high mileage. As it turned out my original starter was better than the used replacement vgwc not!

Yeah - this was a new one (also £63 so probably the same source!)
 
Not good news for me ! But mine sounds as though it's powerful but that doesn't mean the solenoids durable. Well see. Getting decent parts is sometimes a lottery. 12 months warranty though get it sent back. Ok
 
Just looking through eBay I'm not sure I'd trust any of those ads tbh. Powerlite starters are not the most reliable either! If I had my time again I think I would use eurocarparts three different qualities £100 £118 or bosch£167 include 30-40percent discount £110 or so for a Bosch plus very easy to exchange.

Sometimes with Eurocarparts you have to ring to get the right code for the part. If you do ring they tend to give very generous discount.

As an aside Jaguar have started doing a trade club for local independents where they supply common service parts at cost (on the assumption that with the interweb they'll just go elsewhere otherwise and get the cheap parts). Other parts come on and off the deal on a monthly basis. So if your friendly local indy is willing to get the parts on your behalf you're in luck. Or if the local Jag garage will do you a deal. All their suspension parts including the stupidly expensive lower wish-bones were on offer last month. Might be Land Rover will do the same?

Well threw a jump lead round to the starter from the battery to the starter to earth it - nothing - took it back off (glad I made that tool - 5 mins :D) and bench tested it - nothing....

Have now taken the old one to Auto Electrics Redditch http://autoelectricsredditch.co.uk/ for rebuild - ready for tomorrow morning so will see how we go from there....

Ok - feel free to laugh (i did)..... contacted supplier of previously mentioned starter motor:

"I need to return my starter as it doesn't work"
are you sure you've got it connected right :confused:​
"Of course i've connected it right - main battery to the solenoid and ign switch to the spade terminal "
these starters have ignition by-pass circuits in the solenoid cap - if you wire the wrong terminal up the starter will not work or ignition energise. o_O

So of I went to look again at the starter to find there are two lucar terminals on it - but - you can only see both if you look at it end on...and guess which one you can see when it's fitted in the RR..... just what you need a spare, totally pointless (unless you're making generic solenoids) connection - WITH NO INDICATION!!!! :mad:

So - back onto the RR it went and to be fair starts a huge amount better than the original was doing both hot and cold...

So now have 2 starter motors - which wasn't planned but will keep the refurbished Bosch 'on the shelf' until I've fixed the rocker gasket leak!!!

well at least its working and you have a spare in stock, you do know now that the car will behave an the spare starter will sit in the shed for ever more:D
 
Second the starter motor patent removal tool. The comic shows miles of extensions on the hex drive. By the time the twist is taken up impedaments prevent any turning. What a laugh I had until I cobbled up my bespoke starter remover. Has anyone noticed nothings hard on a P38? It's made to be hard.
 
I did notice the smaller connector it was a bit smaller and much easier as it facing me so I thought that can't be right! Tbh I thought it was the same connector but for a different application.

Not far from me! Yes, might well pop over and see if it helps cure the hang-over I am planning on having! No little one as he's off to see one of his grand-mothers.
