i hope someone can help,
currently fitting new clutch and new rear brake drums to my 05 td4 freelander, but cant for the life of me get the drums off, must of worn a lip or something.
any advice to remove them please.

thanks in advance

Sorry about double post, just realized i posted last question in wrong section

Hi,

You can use a hammer, to gently persuade the Drum to get out.
Mechanics use to tap the Drums on the side to get them out, don't know if it's good ... but it works.

Regards.

Have you backed of the knurled nut on the brake shoes, if not then do that as well as adjusting the handbrake cable in between the seats.

Rear of the brake drum remove the oval grommet, this will expose the knurled nut.

Move it with flat blade screw driver.

Take out the securing screw, the drum should then pull off, if not tap it off with hammer.

Once I’d slackened the handbrake cables and the adjusters in the back of the drums, mine came off with a gentle tap.
Take a photo before you start taking them apart!

thanks for replies folks, yeah ive slackened off the cables but those adjusters seem seized, wont turn either way, ive actually got replacements for them. can get the drums free so they wiggle maybe a cm or so, just feels like theres a lip or something stopping them coming all the way off, was a bit nervous of breaking the backing plate as i was prying off, ive hit them, swore at them, even sweet talked them but no luck ha ha

Knock the knurled adjuster nut with a stout screwdriver or small chisel they will turn, also use some plus gas on them.

Also give the drum a few good knocks al round with a lump hammer

If desperate, pic 2 above shows the little clip that holds the brake shoe in, one for each shoe, cut them off at the back( might not have to do this) and use a puller to remove the hub. Might only be a small lip but shoes could be dragging. The brake retaining clips should be replaced if they are in any way rusted. Cost is a couple of pounds.
