Hi,
I have a 110 landrover turbo deisel 19j engine. Yesterday just as I was setting off for the ferry the landy had been idling for about 10 mins when I went to pull away it suddenly started to rev and lots of white smoke billowed from the exhaust replaced by blue smoke. I turned the engine off and and opened the bonnet as I know turbos are suspect on these. There was lots of oil around the waste actuator on the side. Checked oil and water and all normal. Pulled the air intake and outake pipe off the turbo and no signs of oil. checked the turbo fan and very small amount of play, it seemed normal. Took the pipe off from the turbo to the actuator and there is oil there. Does thius mean the turbo is shot? I am on a long overland trip should I replace it? If I replace it does anyone know of an agent near Iskenderun in Turkey that may have spares.

Done what James said and couldn't see any mist and held some kitchen roll under the outlet and no sign of oil. Can the turbo leak oil intermittently? When i first dipped my finger into the inlet manifold there was some oil but it looked very clean and new. Seems to be running fine now. Dipped my finger in the inlet maanifold again and now dry.
But we are going into some very remote areas in Africa.
I did change the oil the other day 200 miles ago and was told it was semi synthetic as i cant read turkish.
If it was full synthetic could it cause a problem?

anythings possible ,but unlikely unlees turbo drain got temporarily got blocked ,inlet will have some oil as all turbos pass some ,but there would have to be a fair bit to run on,but the fact you could switch it off would mean it didnt have enough oil from turbo ,worth checking engine breather isnt filling air intake over a period of time and its just picked some more oil than usual ,they are prone more for bore/ring wear and splitting pistons but they would have other symptoms as well

thanks for your help, came to the conclusion that turbo is good. Went to a very large garage today where they spoke English, they checked the oil I had put in and found it was oil for petrol engines. when i drove to the garage about 2 miles away there was lots of white smoke from exhaust but ran ok. They changed the oil to semi synthetic for diesel and filter also. For the first threes miles or so lots of white smoke which decreased and then ran perfectly normal for about 50 miles, up and down mountains in 30 degrees. Will check oil and water tomorrow, do you think any permanent damage has been caused?

Bogus call. Oil is basically oil and would have no effect. Overfilling might have caused your symptoms. If it has run clean for the mileage you say you should/may be in the clear.

i disagree, i have had 2 similar problems with 19j engines and i changed the oil in both to 20w50 classic motor oil and the problems cured !

one engine was a turner recon with 3000k on it, the problem started when he changed his own oil at work with the 15w40 that they used in there trucks

I had smilar smoke from a fouled injector tip . cleaned it no prob after and that was 2 years ago. white smoke tends to be unburnt derv and you used to get poorfuel were you are

Oh, OK, I don't have knowledge of that motor and it may be that it is sensitive. generally, I wouldn't have thought a problem, at least short term.
