Strong smell of GAS!! (Not fuel - Gas!!)

Do I need the preheater???? will pulling the fuse damage any other part??

Preheater is used to warm the cabin by use of a diesel burner connected to the heater matrix system. It is sited under the front bumper with the exhaust just in front of the nearside wheel arch. It's supposed to operate automatically when outside air temp is low, usually below 5degC. I'm surprised it is operating already though. Pulling the fuse wont hurt it at all.
