Hello

I have recently bought a 53 plate Freelander and on it's first long run at the weekend we intermittently had a smell of gas inside the car. Having looked on the forum, people have suggested a preheater but i have looked under the car and it doesn't seem to have one fitted. Any other suggestions of what it could be and how to check/fix? Thanks

funny you should say this I have a pre heater the pipe comes out of the front bumper on near side and as this has its fuse taken out i knew it could not be that then when under the car doing a service i noticed it was there again have you got air con I thought it may be that but got to the back axel and I think it may be that oil was very low re filled to leavel and have not smelt that gas like smell since may be just coincedent i do not know but will be keeping a eye on my diff oil

what's your mileage? check diameters of front tyres aren't bigger than rears..sounds like tyre differences or seized VCU may be cooking your rear diff!
check diff oil level and it's breather hose for signs of leakage ASAP.

is it a Td4 or petrol?

Failed back door seal could be allowing fumes from the CAT to enter the car, does the rear floor cubby hole fill up with water or has the floor been drilled to allow the water to drain (holes in the cubby box floor could also allow fumes to enter)

Thanks for the replies. I have checked the rear door and all looks fine. The car has done 83k. I'm not great with engines, it's a td4, where is the diff level and I will check that next. And any help on vcu.
Thanks again

recommend renewing them at 75000miles mark.
your diff only has one plug, look under vehicle from the back and there is a small plug halfway up the back of the diff.
unscrew this (3/8" square drive I think) and this is where your oil level should be up to.
at top of diff is a small plastic pipe (just above offside driveshaft) check this hasn't sprayed liquid out the end
is there any oil leaking out the diff at all from other area? I.e where the driveshafts go in or at front where prop attaches?

first things first though..do the crude VCU check, well documented on hear and youtube

come back and tell us your findings
