Hi all

Noticed a few posts about fuel smells but thought I would start my own as recently noticed very strong smell of fuel inside my Cab, so much so, that my clothes (and anyone who dares to travel with me) stink of petrol. My Landy was originally a SWB 88 diesel, but converted to V8 petrol (before I bought it) so gather most likely reason is worn fuel pipes and I'd noticed some light cracks. Any help as always appreciated as still learning about my Landy and I am no mechanic!

Thanks

Pete

Nasty, I had a split tank once and it does concentrate your mind. I think that talcum powder is often used to find fuel leaks - if you have an electric fuel pump (I don't know the V8) dust all the lines and then switch on the ignition to pressurise the system. If it's a ninety and the tank is under your seat you need to have a look all over it including at the top of it where rust can get worse than you'd think.

Fuel tank on my 90 has cork sender gasket and it stunk, as old

A leak usually shows as a cruddy dark stain. Very likely to be the fuel tank rather than fuel line. If it's under the seat check it at the inside and rear around where the tank seam. That's usually where they go as all the crud gets stuck in there...a design fault.

Many thanks for your replies everyone, smell is strongest under the seat so will strip it down and have a good look there and get the talcum powder out!

Thanks

Pete

Dont forget to check in every nook and cranny. I found a disposable lighter useful for the dark corners................. :D

If you can smell fuel your not insured, check the small print on your policy.

I replaced mine with thick wall copper (central heating Microbore) pipe front to back to be safe.

Check your fuel line near the engine as that can faultier on the return pipe. If your engine sounds crabby it will be the feeder. Check underneath for the fuel bowl filter for any leaks dripping on the ground.. If the tank faulty check damage or split in the seam. Fuel pump from the tank or sender unit could also leak from sloshing back and forth.
