Hi Guys -my defender 90 has been losing a bit of water lately and running a wee bit high temp wise, after checking for leaks and not finding any, I chucked some radweld in system, still using water!
The hose into radiator is v.warm but the outlet is cold,as in not cool-COLD.
Changed thermostat y'starday, when idling the gauge wont rise above half way but when driving it is almost on red???
drove 18 miles this morning and hoses as above xcept perhaps a bit warmer than usual, very little pressure from xpansion tank and the water is .vcold in the tank???

I can squeeze both large hoses and get water moving in xpansion tank, could I have a block radiator?
Also my fan runs constantly as soon as I start engine from cold.

Any advise would be great

cheers steven

could be a blocked rad but could also be an airlock run the engine with the filler tank cap off and watch for bubbles.

could be a blocked rad but could also be an airlock run the engine with the filler tank cap off and watch for bubbles. The fan is supposed to run from cold as it is driven by the fanbelt unless you've had an electric fan fitted and the viscious fan removed. Could also be the waterpump.

It is normal for the fan to run from cold chap as it's a viscous fan, it sounds like you've got no circulation, water pump is the most likely culprit.

Thanks for that guys -I just remembered another slant to the problem -If I take out the thermostat then everything is fine again, well not sure about leak as havent tried it for that long but the circulation and temp is fine, all hoses warm etc!! Does that mean that the pump is infact ok -whats the chances of thew new thermostat being faulty??

How can I check pump? - theres no movemnent in pulley or squeek from bearing,
if I took the top off pump and turned pump pulley bye hand should I be able to see water in the block moving??

 cheers again steven

If all the hoses are hot and temp is fine without the thermostat then the pump is fine chap, if the pump wasn't working the water just wouldn't circulate i.e temp in the red, radiator cool, no heat coming through the air vents pretty much the same as what you're getting but if you've taken the stat out and it works fine then the new stat has to be faulty, take it back to the shop and throw it at them.

Hi again -re - above water probs. Im now using almost half litre of water on a 36 mile journey !!!!!!!!!!
Cannot for the life of me find a leak, its not in the oil,its not getting chucked out the xpansion tank and it certainly aint going oot the xaust BUT IT IS GOING SOMEWHERE.

The closest thing I can find to a burst it the top hose into rad has rubbed half way thru (on the radius of air cleaner housing) could it possibly be enough to evaporate. Theres still nae sign of water lying anywhere though.

I'm on the verge of putting her into mechanic,

oh the joys

Have you checked the matrix and the rad? dont just look for damp look for residue of coolant ( green ) as well. Is there still a circulation issue?

get yerself a cooling system tester and get some pressure in it. if yer wanna pay postage yer can borrow mine but yer probably cheaper getting one from ebay

Good plan, it's gotta be the way forward

Cheers Lads - I will get a tester (thanks v.much for the offer), I have noticed that turqoiuse powdery gungey stuff around the copper pipes going into the heater unit, could that be a clue??
Although the heater is working great ???????

Yes still got circulation prob but not just as bad, although sometimes can still run 18 mile and have no pressure in xpansion tank and water cold in it aswell, but not all the time.

thanks for the help
