I have a 1999 freelander diesel, which I have had for about a year, and so far so good, although I did have the alternator belt snap about 6 weeks or so ago and it was replaced at a garage, they said they also needed a new tensioner at the same time.

I am not very mechanically minded being more skilled at bodywork and paint jobs, so please be gentle and explain slowly if you can.

A couple of days ago I heard my horn giving a continual blast when my car was parked in my driveway. I went out to check and realised that I had left my keys in the ignition and that the battery now seemed flat.

A friend brought round his jump leads and we proceeded to try and start the car.
he was standing outside with the leads etc, I was inside turning the key.

As the car only turned over and did not fire, "he said stop for a min".
I did as requested and took the keys out of the car, BUT the car kept trying to turn over, only stopping when the jump lead was removed.
Once the jump lead was put back on again, the car tried turning over again.....

This maybe a red herring but a few weeks ago the alarm started to go off for no reason when i within a minute of me locking the car with the remote.
I had since then only been using the key in the door locking approach.

As the bank holiday id here and I live in a remote area of ireland, their is no chance of getting any mechanical advice for a few days, so I am asking for your help.

Their is another problem at the moment as well concerning the power steering turning off intermitently when I am trying to park up, local garage said it sounded like a belt coming loose and I am do to pop it in next week to be looked at.
(I cant see how this can be connected, but I thought I should say)
Please ask any questions and I will try and answer.

Sounds to me like yer starter solenoid is sticking - new starter motor time.
If yer really keen, you could try stripping the starter motor and just replacing the solenoid - I think you can get them from flea-bay?

Thank you for your advice Treworgey 90, I will have a look on ebay and see what comes up.

May I ask all the others things I listed on my initial request are linked in some way, or do i have a bunch of little things to get sorted.

By the way how is Cornwall ? I lived in near Liskeard for some years, and try as I might I cant find a decent pasty or ireland.

the freelander can do strange things when given an external voltage source. depends where you had the jump leads connected.
just as an example, if you have a 12v battery connected to the auxiliary power or cigarette lighter, the radio stays on no matter whether the key is turned on or not. as trewy says, it might be a dodgy solenoid, which you are then also giving external power to.

good luck
