I have a 1995 300tdi. I have only has it a couple of weeks and it has a strange issue when she gets near the read on fuel. Between a quarter and the red she starts to tick over a bit lumpy, then it she gets any lower will cut out and not rev. As soon as filled up gain she is perfect. Is it possible there is a lot of water in the bottom of the tank, or just a lot of crap? Is it an easy job to whip out the tank?

Cheers in advance.

I am basing it the fact that she ticks over almost immediately after being topped up, I thought if there was air in the system it would take longer to sort it's self and I have run a diesel dry in the past and the loss of power felt very different.

with my disco , as soon as low diesel light comes on within a couple of miles it starts running rough and is a pig to start ,
my advise use 1/4 mark as ( bugger i better fill up )

Thanks, I was thinking that would be the best solution but I just wondered if it was a common thing. My wife has a habit of playing petrol station lottery so I have a feeling I might keep a jerry can handy.

my fuel gauge is the opposite, can be full and not read full, but goes well below the fill up line before it starts to splutter. i filled it up once just as it got to that line and it took 72 liters to the brim. so still had 14 left in it. about 3 gallon, so another 90 mile :) theyre all different :D

tanks fill with crud, the newest disco 1 is 13yrs old, either clear out the sedimenter and maybe your tank ot just keep the fuel level topped up.

I had a similar issue on my 300 Tdi in Zimbabwe - there it was caused by dirty fuel. What can happen is that the crud sinks to the bottom of the tank and blocks the bottom holes of the fuel pickup unit. When the tank is above quarter full, fuel can get in the top, but when it gets below quarter full, it has to go through the bottom holes which are partially blocked. Solution in my case was to have the tank removed and cleaned by my local Landy expert who diagnosed it immediately.

Cheers!
