Straight Through Exhaust

Hello all,
I've been thinking about fitting a straight through pipe on my 1988 200tdi. I've read in places that they give a slight power gain without effecting the mpg. Is this true and is it a worth while upgrade?

This is the one I'm looking at: http://www.paddockspares.com/pm950-ss-silencer-replacement-pipe-def-90-200tdi.html

Cheers

Doubtful it will make much difference to power, bit I don't think it will do any harm either. And they aren't much more noisy, turbocharger is quite an effective silencer.

My td5 90 has a straight through exhaust and seeing as I got to work at 5am some days I thought I'd give the neighbours a treat and put the silencer back on. That lasted a week before it was removed again due to the lack of power, sod the neighbours!

There seems to be a craze at the moment for boy racers to have exhausts de-catted, they seem to be getting away with it as long as emissions are ok

That's been around for a while with hot hatches etc cause it's easy/cheap in comparison with the results. It'll make a big difference especially in conjunction with a remap/intercooler but I always thought the results weren't nearly as good with diesels.

I did the egr and air filter too. I can't say it's more powerful but definitely much smoother will a tiny increase on mpg. No problems with emissions either.

dont forget the old trick of a go faster stripe and gold wheels :p:D

+1
My hobby years ago & interest still was in ex. military vehicles, American in particular. Versions of the M35 (late 'fifties onwards) had a turbocharged multi-fuel engine, with it's vertical stack & no silencer it sounded truly awesome, but then it was considerably larger in capacity than the LR unit

No MOT issues what so ever.
Power gains will br minimal but the turbo will spool up faster.
About town it isnt that much louder tha standard, mway its a bit droney

may i ask , are decats supposed to be part of future mots

would certainally cause a lot of issues if regs were changed , but yet again as always may just be the fake news stories going around, lol

You only need a cat fitted for MOT if it had one originally. Some petrol S struggle with emissions if it is removed.

mine has a cat fitted but see so many being removed , so wonder how there able to pass the mot

wondered if to decat mine as i believe it's better for the turbo, i.e., spooling , looks as well them being cheaper buying a straight through pipe

As mentioned only if its fitted from factory. The OP is on about a 200tdi so no cat anyway.

My 02 90 had either a cat or dpf not actually certain which. Went through 5 MOTs at 4 different garages with no issues.

All depends on if the tester can see if it is there or not, if your emissions are in check then no worries. My 90 actually scored lower on the smoke test with the EGR, DPF/CAT and mid box removed.

thks for the info

i recently blanked both egrs on mine and was worried regarding the mot , however it passed with no problems

u hear so many things ref mot , never know maybe after we leave the eu we won't be penalised so much , lol

I've done away with egr and cat on my disco td5 and straight middle pipe. had no problems with mot. Is there such a thing as the earlier td5s not having a cat originally which might make it easier to blag it on a later one? Probably down to tester to be fair.
I noticed turbo spools up earlier and mpg very slightly better. Sounds great but as @bankz5152 says can be drony at cruising speed
