I would like to replace my door pillers, and bulkhead outriggers at some point, I was wondering do you really need to take the bulkhead off in order to do this?

I was also thinking I might just patch up the outrigger, the top still seems solid and the sides are ok but the base has some bad bits, also the footwell has some damage, can you replace that metal, or is that all part of the bulkhead?

You dont have to take the bulkhead off,but you have take the wings and doors off to do the pillers.To do the outriggers take the floor panels out. yes you can replace the metal.

you can replace the footwells but it requires welding and chopping of the old ones. i think you can buy new footwells at paddockspares.com and all you have to do is cu out the old ones and weld the new ones in. time consuming job. do not weld the new ones over the top of the old ones (a trick used by some landrover cowboys) as they will corrode each other quicker.

hi not a cowboy (i think) but when i did my n/s footwell i just chopped back the rust and put the new one in over the old one, my thinking was the old one (what was left) would give added strengh - was i wroung in my thinking

mine is a SIII but a footwell is a footwell

yer better removing all the old metal for a number of reasons. one being as yer maun says any rust on it will quickly travel to the new stuff. you'll have a gap inbetween the old and new which will trap water and cause more rust, and you'll have bits of sharp metal which ,you can bet yer granny, you'll catch yer hands on while working down around there. and also it wont be asthe..aatheist..;athetc...it won't look nice.

Brand new TD5 bulkheads for £150, worth considering?

Done two bulkhead changes now and having seen how bad a bulkhead can be while still looking reasonable from the outside I would do it again.
If you stick to just replacing the bulkhead and not getting side-tracked with other jobs while you are at it you should get it done in a long weekend. The trouble is that while it is all stripped down there is a big temptation to do other jobs while you have unrestricted access (makes sense).

stupid Q will a TD5 bulkhead go into a SIII and where does one get them from at that price please

While the overall dimensions & shape are the same you will have to make modifications but nothing too major (windscreen hinges, tunnel, steering column mounting etc).

There are plenty of places selling them for around £200 but my local dealer (Nick Evans LR Spares) said he is now selling them for between £100-£150 (I think the lower figure was for me as I have been such a good customer over the years).

As I said, you have to make up your own mind but I have seen just how bad a bulkhead can be when taken off the vehicle when it looked quite respectable while on the vehicle.
