I have been reading similar threads on water pump problems. Is there any advice out there, I am living 1100 metres altitude and am scared of freezing my landy, water ****ing out and cannot keep pouring in buckets of anti freeze, need to go to Landrover tomorrow if cant get advise, dont want to get stung for megabucks if I can solve it myself.
Sorry to be stupid but I'm assuming its the water pump, (td5) There is a removable cover with 5 bolts, to which a flexible water pipe is attached, inside the cover is a metal fanned spinny thing (technical description) with a rubber seal in between cover. Vehicle makes an intermittent whirling / squealing noise and water gushes out down engine block, appears to come from little round hole on 'the pump', very difficult to see exactly where it comes from. Is pump knackered?Does seal need replacing? Can anyone help me please:confused:

Aha, is the bearing seal about 6-8cm in diameter? Does that mean I just need to replace that seal? I suppose only Landrover sell them? I tried instant gasket but didnt make any difference
Thanks for your reply

Is there anywhere else it could be leaking from around there? Its not where the rubber pipe joins the cover, tis difficult to see exactly, I'm sure I read that if it leaks from that hole, it means the pump is dead!

i have not had much to do with the TD5 but on all other engines if water is leaking from the pee hole it means you need a new pump, hake a piccy of the pump and post it up on here an i will have a look

oh yeah, forgot to mention, even when engine not on, still pours out! does this fit in with your theory! thanks again

I'd say you need a new water pump as rightly pointed out the 'tell-tale' hole is there to 'tell' you that the bearing seal has gone, hence the squealing noise - they aren't really user repairable and are cheap enough to buy and as you've already taken it off, you know how to do it!

Thanks guys, I suspected as much, it is fairly straightforward to do? Is there aning I should know, or not do? Thanks again
