If you do as I said you will automatically find the fault or get to the point where you have a set of jump leads direct to winch-it is fool proof

use your engine battery-known good -jumped across, if it all works your winch battery is either flatter than a witches tit or ****ed.

If it still doesn't work, leave it connected to engine battery and place earth on winch body.
use + jump lead to Solenoid.operate the controls( you hear solenoid click?)
(if it works you have either damaged cable from battery or shagged winch battery)
If you can't hear a click -suspect solenoid wiring.

If it still does not work, touch positive jump lead to output terminal of solenoid-if winch operates the solenoid is faulty or you have control wiring fault.

If it still does not work, jump lead positive to main motor feed terminal nut briefly- if it works the fault is cable from solenoid to motor.
If it does not work-winch problem

so am i connecting jump leads direct to the winch or the battery that the winch is connected to?

Try both mate, jump lead + stright to the winch would by pass the selonoid.

Dont forget tho, when the selonoid clicks that means its energised (Open to enable current to pass through), but that doesnt nessisarily mean the big power cables are passing current down then. It must be a prob with the actual batt cables (The big ones) not giving the winch the supply.

There effectively two or more circuits, one to switch the selonoid on/off and the 'big' circuit where the big power flows to the winch. The seloniod is simply an electrial switch needing its own power to switch itself in on/off.

i had the batterys tested this morn and this is what the printout said

main battery
rated at 590sae
measured at 532sae
soc 12.16v
battery health 90%
state of charge 45%

battery good,recharge

aux battery
rated at 590sae
measured at 511sae
soc 12.23v
state of health 86%
state of charge 50%

battery good,recharge

dont know exactly what all that means or whether it will cause my symptoms, but ive bought a charger and put them on charge so we will see what happens..
