Stiff Clutch Pedal

The clutch on my 2006 Freelander Td4 is stiff to push down. I only need to depress the clutch pedal about half an inch to engage gears which I can without any problems.
However - with my head in the engine bay and my wife pushing the clutch pedal up and down - I can hear a squeak which I think is coming from inside the gearbox and probably the slave cylinder.
Any ideas what may be happening and what I should do about it please.

Hi joe I to had the same problem however my freelander is petrol. and were the slave cylinder is I just sprayed mine with wd40/penetration oil and it worked a treet,just see if it works mate , just spray on the push rod on the slave cylinder . hope this helps

Nodge, My guess is that replacing a clutch is difficult job. Is it possible to do it on the driveway or am I going to have to take it to a garage?
