Sticking handbrake

Hi,

I have a issue with my '56 Freelander 1 TD4.

The issue has been brought up on this forum previously: https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/freelander-rear-brakes-sticking.35123/

I start the engine, release the handbrake, and she won't move when I reach the bite. It's like the handbrake is frozen on.

A couple of revs in reverse and 1st and some gentle rocking back and forth seems to solve the issue.

I'm taking it in for its annual service in two weeks. Can anyone tell me what it is that needs fixing, what I need to tell the garage?

Hi Dan. Do you realise how simple (and cheap) it is to do an annual service yourself? I have the official LR service schedule for the FL1 and it is pretty much: check everything works, pump up tyres, lube hinges, change oil and filters. It even omits an important filter (crankcase breather) that we on here can show you how to change.

I digress... Sticky handbrake VERY common. Every few months, I remove the drums and shoes and free up the handbrake mechanism within using pliers and WD40, then copper grease. Also check the cables are free in their sleeves. Give the shoes and drum lining a buff with sandpaper, taking care to remove any rust ridge. Check also that the drain hole is not plugged. Before refitting, I apply some copper grease to the bosses, where the shoes sit against the backing plate.

Something in this procedure prevents our handbrake from sticking, which it used to do regularly, especially after washing or heavy rain.
 
Also make sure that the rubber bung that cover the inspection port on the backing plate of the drum is still there ... idiots, I mean, brake and tyre people have been known to throw that away, which leads to water ingress.
