Hi all had my freelander td4 03 for a few years now absolutely love it never lets me down but always gives me grief.
Over the years this site has helped me no end with things in my skill level which isnt very high to be fair.
The issue i am having is that my landrover orignal stereo the one with tapedeck / multichanger seems to not start up with the ignition on but if i take the fuse out then back in it will turn on but i have to keep rentering the security code.
electrics not my strong point sorry any help much appreciated
 
The should be a permanent live and a switch live to system, if as you say you take fuse out and put it back in and it works then contacts need cleaning with emery cloth or board and try changing fuse , the wire filament inside may be loose, it does happen

Damn, you say you need to put in code when you take fuse out and reinsert but that would indicate that supply is the permanent live, have you checked the switched live fuse, this is normally an inline fuse holder tucked away behind the radio unit, other possibilities are dirty contacts on On/Off switch or dry solder joint internally in unit itself, do you possess a multimeter at all
 
Yes, remove unit with ignition off, undo inline fuse holder if tubular fuse usually about 10amp and clean contacts and fuse ends, if inline is a push in blade fuse remove fuse and sandpaper ends of blades, check condition of holder and lightly squeeze holder ends with long nose pliers to grip fuse tighter, check condition of wiring incase someone has bodged a feedoff it to run something else
 
Also check negative which is normally earthed to body around that area, may just be a bad earth due to body surface rust or oxidisation, remove clean and reattach
 
Damn thing happened again most odd ran ok for 4 days no trouble then this morning same again. Replaced fuse in head unit but still wont turn back on after car ignition off.
Could the head unit just be on the way out?
 
Right, remove unit from dashboard, remove top cover to gain access to circuit board, you should be able to see back housing of on/off/volume control, spray some electrical contact cleaner lubricant into the casing of volume control and rotate button and push button several times to disperse around. If you have a small soldering iron you can clean up the joints on the circuit board that look dull or even broken with fresh solder having removed unit from car or power at least.
If this does not solve the problem I am afraid your down to base level i.e. components most likely an electrolytic capacitor that has dried out or blown its can
 
Hi keith done what you suggested but still had no joy so took it to a local car stereo place that pretty much condemned the unit as short of sending for a refurb they coldnt sort. Think im just going to have to change the unit .
Many thanks for your time and help as this as taught me a few new things.
