coming out of the supermarket yesterday I got into my disco to drive away as I did so I heard a clunk and had no steering. On looking under the car the steering ball joint had separated. The car was recovered to a local garage, this is concerning me, has this happened to anyone else and why?

Before you get totally slammed, maybe a bit of a "Hi there, i'm so and so, I drive a ??? etc etc before coming straight in with a request for help. Also the search function is usually really helpful!!

Is this a Tdi or a Td5??

Things like this don't normally just "give way" There is warnings, things like vague steering???

Those sensible ones among us use things like our eyes and our grease guns to ensure things like this don't happen!!

as said above you would have had warning signs for a good time before ,on a 15 year old vehicle daily checks like oil ,coolant brake fluid ,clutch fluid and a gander underneathe at brakes .ball joints ,wheel bearings are recommended ,get somone to do it or learn your self ,its not the same thing as a 3 year old car which can manage with yearly service

Hi, sorry this is Mel, and I had the 98 Disco 1 serviced with a new clutch and timing belt 700 miles prev, the car did not show any signs hence the concern. On an American site they recommend changing the ball joint at 60,000, I bought the car 3 months ago with 245/16 tyres on, would this have any bearing ? thanks.

Again , tdi or td5 ? Could be either 98 ....but welcome anyway ! To avert the wrath go to the into page and then put your location and vehicle in your signature on the 'user cp' section - that way you wont have to tell people every time ! ;)

Back on the car , I agree with the guys above , there would have been signs/feel ...BUT !!! If its your first vehicle of this type and you havent had it long it may be that you thought that what you were feeling was normal . One can't be an expert immediately , so dont worry . I have had the steering arm drop off the PAS box before now - thats fun on night time windy cornish lanes , I can tell you
