steering wheel horn buttons

Hi I have a very odd problem the right hand horn button on my disco would only need the slightest brush of my arm to touch it and it would sound, it looks slightly raised compaired to the other button, but the fuse for the horn has now blown and I have no idea how or if its possible to remove the button and have a look at it or do I need to remove the whole steering wheel appreciate any advice
 
I don't think you have to take the wheel off. Undo the hard-to-get-to two screws on the other side of the steering wheel and then that should give you access. Best to disconnect the battery so that the airbag doesn't go off. (Make sure you've got your stereo code handy).
 
Have not long had the car so I shall have to dig around for the code (hope its with the paperwork that came with it as its not the original stereo) thanks for the advice I shall have a go in the week if you dont hear from me again I have probably blown my head of with the airbag!!!!!!!

Assuming it's a Disco II the steering wheel horn buttons are a press fit into the wheel. You can remove them by using a small, flat bladed knife.

It sounds like yours have come out at some stage and not been reinstalled correctly.

Thanks for all the info I like the idea of just flicking out the buttons with a flat knife sounds a lot easier than removing the steering wheel air bag module, to be honest I appreciate the advice regarding the removal of air bag module but it scares me a bit in case it goes off. I am ok at basic things but anything to do with electronic explosives is for me a bit of a no no so I will try just filcking the button out and if that doesn't work I think I will leave it until the MOT and get the garage to fix it

nothing can happen if you disconnect the battery 10 minutes before you start working...i'm affraid that in situ you'll not be able to unplug the switches, eventually just remove theyrs push buttons
 
Back to the saga of my steering wheel buttons. I did manage to remove the button by using a flat knife and flicking it out but apart from the spring not sitting square'ly behind the button all seemed ok.I put it all back and thought job done, so I replaced the blown fuse and yes! it blew again.So the problem could be anywhere I had a look at both horns behind the front grill and cant see anything amis anybody got any idea where I should start to investigate first.
 
if the fuse blows the most obvious is that one of the horns is fubar'd... unplug both horns... if the fuse will not blow plug them back one by one... when it will blow that's the one... they are electromagnetic horns and enven if they are not shortcircuited they might have greater drain usually due to water ingress... if the fuse will blow even with horns disconnected it means there's a wiring issue and it needs measurements...but my money is on the horns(quite common)
 
Its back to my not working horn. I have done as suggested and disconnected both horns I put a new fuse in and switched the ignition on and pressed the buttons on the steering wheel and the fuse didn't blow. I then connected one horn and did the same thing the fuse didn't blow but still no sounds from the horn, I then did the same with the other horn and the fuse didn't blow but still no sound from the horn,I then connected both horns up pressed the button on the steering wheel and the fuse blew. I am confused any one got any idea what the problem could be

i adjust my previous answer:

sounds like its worth buying a couple of new horns and see if it fixes the problem have had a look online at horns and they come in high or low tones do I buy one of each or both the same
 
If one of the horn buttons on the wheel wasn't sitting right, then I'd perhaps see if that may be the problem. Probably it's been out before and there's a short in the wheel.
 
The button wasn't sitting right so I eased it out and carefully put it back and it now seems to be sitting nice and square but your right it could be a short but before I have the hassle of removing the wheel I think I will try replacing the horns if that doesn't work then its down to the garage to have them remove the wheel and check it out thanks for the advise
