Morning all,
Having alot of trouble with my steering Defender TD5.
initially I had a leak on the PAS Box and after reading on hit...I bit the bullet and got a recon off paddocks.

Beforensics changing the PAS box I had a couple of inches of play in the steering wheel....now that I have changed it...this seems alot lot worse around half a steering wheel.

Do I need to adjust the PAS box? Or should I be looking for something else?

I have been looking through the forum and can't find any posts with the same issue?

Cheers

With the steering central is there any play on the Pitman arm (with it disconnected from the rod), should be the smallest amount of free play (barely noticeable). if you have a fair amount then it needs adjusting (or sending back). Otherwise check the steering UJ's and collapsible shaft for freeplay

Check your;
Track rod ends
Drag link ends
Panhard rod bushes
Steering column U/J's

Get somebody to rock the steering wheel side to side while you look at each joint.

Don't start fiddling with the box until you have eliminated all these other areas.

Just been looking at the drop arm again and the ball joint where it connects to the drag link seems to have some movemen I it ....is there any way to tighten this as the nut and ball joint spin when I try to tighten it?

Can't be tightened...needs replacing. You'll need the ball joint removal tool from Paddocks to do the job....or buy replace the whole droparm with a ball joint already fitted.

Did your steering box come with a drop arm? Put a photo up, might give a few more clues. The nut shouldn't be spinning, no matter how knackered the ball joint is. If the threaded section that goes up through the drag link is spinning, you need to get some leverage (long crowbar, 2x2 etc)under the chassis crossmember and above the drag link, lift it so you force the drag link end onto the drop arm which will stop it spinning then tighten the nut. Unless the nut or something else is knackered causing it to lock up on the threads.

Bollocks to the bloody ball joints. Replace it with the Disco conversion off Gwyn Lewis, never have to do it again.

That said the PAS box is adjustable, there is a torx socket on the top which can be adjusted.
