Hi Guys

My track rod ends are worn so I thought it might be a good idea to change the rods too as they also look tired and should make the job a bit easier too :D

This is the first time i've changed these and wanted to make sure I had everything I need :eek:

Heavy Duty Rods and ball Joints:

PM960 Heavy Duty Steering Rods for all Defender inc Ball Joints

6x tube clamps (two per ball joint?)

577898 Tube clamp with bolt

is there anything else I need for this?

Hi Hext

you don't need the clapms. I got these exact rods at christmas and they are great when on. They have locking nusts on each of the ball joint ends and as such you can save yourself some pennies and not get the clamps.

i would recomend giving it all a good coating of copper slip before you screw them in, will help if you ever need to replace them. i also changed the streering dampner at the same time, made a big difference to the feel of the streaing.

i had a total mare getting them off as the ball joint just spun when I was trying to get the old ones off (joints were pretty shot). Trick the local garage said is to put your jake under the rod next to the ball joint and jack up until its under load. Givne your changing the rods anyhow you don't need to worry about damaging them any it did the job for me. it was the first bit of macanical stuff I did on her and was pretty easy to do.

Apart from being an upgrade they look pretty good aswell. one point to note though is that the central gaurd for the old ros will not fit over the heavy duty ones. Also when I tightened them up to te correct touque (not sure about that spelling), I couldn't get the split pin in, was told just to tighten up and put the pin in.

As already said, you don't need the clamps as they use lock nuts. I've had a set of them fitted to my landy for around 18 months now. The other good thing about em is they have greasable track rod ends.
