Steering Rack needs replacing...

I've just had my 1999 1.8 litre Petrol Motor Freelander in for it's 140,000 kilometre service at my local Landrover dealer and I have been told that my Steering Rack needs to be replaced and will cost me at least $4,000 (Australian Dollars). I am in shock - firstly because of the news that it needs to be replaced and secondly because of the price! My car has been regularly serviced by Landrover ever since I purchased it new in 1999 and I hardly ever leave the bitumen, so can anyone out there in cyberspace tell me why it might have failed and whether they have suffered a similar experience to mine.

First of all sorry to hear of expensive repair bill.

As with any steering system, let alone steering racks, the components eventually wear to the degree where they need adjusted - more usually on ball joints where shims can be removed - or replaced. Steering racks however are best suited for lighter vehicles, as the pinion has a lot of stress placed on it moving the rack on heavier weighted vehicles, especially with bigger wheel/tyre sizes. I wouldn't like to comment specifically on freelanders, but 140,000km is not a poor figure; plus if only we all knew when components were going to reach the end of their duration....

I can't comment on aus' pricing, but if it gives an idea, a new rack in UK would cost in order of £560 - £600. Even allowing for shipping and currency conversion (and labour?), $4k seems ridiculously expensive.
 
i agree that does seem a tad high for a rack.. outback jack has a nice rack but i don't know if its for sale and he's in the same colony as you.

They want to change your rack but havent give you a good reason and you dont think theres anything wrong with it,judging by your "surprise"

Thanks for your replies to my post, it was actually repaired by ULR [the largest Land Rover dealer in Australia] for not much money at all in the end. It seems that the original advice [from the Land Rover dealer in Canberra] that it couldn't be repaired was somewhat "lazy" advice as it turned out. It just goes to show that it always pays to get a second opinion or preferably an opinion that you trust! I still have my Land Rover and it is going beautifully after more than 180,000 kms. yup but we're waiting fer the list of peeps to grow ....we need replies to enable us to get a damm good price instead of just a good price
