Steering pump belt skipping after steering box rebuilt

Third refurbed steering box failed so I decided to rebuild one myself out of two spares I had.

Now it’s fitted the box seems to work fine. The issue is the steering pump belt skips at the extremes of steering.

Obviously I’ve fitted a new belt and it’s very tight.

Any thoughts? Just wondering if there’s an issue with the box not able to allow pressure to bipass when it reaches the extremes of steering (is that even how the box works? I dont recall there being a valve in the box?)

Thought the valve was in the pump?
Did you fit a new belt? These can loose the width & drop onto the groove further
 
I always avoid taking the steering onto full lock - I'm sure I read many years ago that this was to be avoided as it caused steering box failure.

What engine and vehicle?

Did you reuse the pulleys? Going through 3 boxes also seems highly unusual. What were you other failures?

When you say skipping. Are you meaning belt squeal as it isn’t a toothed belt?

Are you sure it is tight? On a Tdi you have multiple belts but they run from a common adjuster. So if slack on one side it may prevent getting correct tension on the other.

Obviously check for any contaminants on the pulleys and belt. You could clean the pulleys up and I’d try another belt from a different make.
 
keeping any power steering on full lock for more than a few seconds can boil the fluid.
I think it is like 10 or 20 seconds on full lock with the valve lifting.

They all leaked - poorly made refurb boxes. I think they just did the output shaft seal and then resprayed them.

Sorry it’s a 200tdi defender 90.

Yes squeal and also you can see the belt skipping.

Good point on cleaning the pulley.

On a TDI the belts run separate and each item has its own adjuster
 
Think it’s worth replacing the pump then?

My concern is for the up coming MOT. Slight squeak in the belt at full lock an MOT fail?
 
have you got the 13 mm wide power steering belt fitted?
It is best not to run the 200 TDO Paris built too tight as the support bearing at the end of the steering pump can fail sharing the shaft off I've had that happened to me twice.
I think 200 TDI power steering pump is unique to the defender model only.
If I'm in correctly it is quite expensive.
