When I engage the last 7/8th of wheel-lock steering, such as turning a tight corner, I hear a clattering, screaming noise from deep in the bonnet area. It sounds like a fan clattering on something - it only appears when I have the cabin fan switched on. No fan, no noise.

How the 'eck is my cabin fan affected by the steering?

If it's TD4 then I suspect that the crank damper/ pulley has delaminated. Look for glitter around the bottom pulley as an indication of this.

Thanks I will check - can you settle my mind and suggest why I can get no noise at all from this problem when my cabin air fan is switched off?

Thanks - never thought of the aircon switch!

fantastic forum as ever, cheers.

(back to the garage as they fitted a crumbled Crank Pulley and Tensioner just 2000 miles back and it cost me £400)

What make of crank pulley did they fit ? only fit a Genuine Corteco one any others in my opinion are a waste of time, available from Isaland4x4

I need to update this - and ask for help again..

It wasn't the aircon pump, the garage replaced the Alternator, Tensioner and Idler. Total cost £341

6 weeks have passed without a problem, but last night, the exact same symptoms re-appeared,

eg, when turning the steering lock fully to the right (as if turning right at a 90 degree junction) I get a tremendously loud metal crashing thrashing noise that ceases when the steering returns to centre

As before, if I turn disengage the aux belt drive (eg for aircon) this does not happen and all is quiet.

Can anyone advise, what is physically happening to make this noise happen (with the aux belt engaged) only when the steering is turned fully to the right? I can't figure this out, I'd like to try to figure it out before heading back to the garage.

Hi
When the garage changed the Alternator, tensioner and Idler I am presuming they changed the belts also (Both) Auxiliary and the Air conditioning compressor belt ? if not I would plumb for the compressor belt first the short one, and also change the main Auxiliary if not changed already only use good quality belts as above in my other post.

It could also be the water pump squealing, but then yet again if you are hearing a metal thrashing sound I wonder if when they change the crank pulley, they used as above the Genuine Corteco one if not it could be delaminating again I have seen after market ones do this after a few days/weeks, get it back to the garage and have them check it over what does the receipt say about which parts were used ? if they have not used the specified parts I would want a refund and take it to another garage.

Crank pulley delamination is still the prime candidate for this. ;)

Nothing on the receipt other than what item was replaced.
personally I would ask what part was used, ie make what warranty is on it and you want it checked and replaced with a Corteco this time if of cause it is the pulley which is starting to sound like it is, also have those both belts checked and replaced with Genuine Contitech belts as above in my other post.

take it back there is too many rip of garages around
That might be a bit harsh. I'm have a good relationship with my mechanic. There are times when they do get it wrong - and they hate being reminded about it too - just like we all do! But there times when they do work and disturb things and another problem rears up. Things break and they have to replace them at no cost to us. Case in point, my sons car - taking the exhaust manifold off two studs snapped. It had to be sent away for the remains to be removed - no charge to the son for that bit but an extra two days off the road . Lol a short period of when the roads were safer!
