How easy is it to overhaul a steering box - or is it better just to buy a new one :(

I have adjusted it as much as I can and there still seems to be a lot of play.

Just been down that route with one of mine..........lots of sucking of air through teeth from the mechanic, after pushing him on the subject he conceded that easier for him to replace than repair as labour costs would eat up any savings on the refurbishment option. I could be wrong but there's some spring which can be a sod to remove without the correct tool.:confused:

i second that, i know someone who got quite badly hurt messing with one
 
I would check / change your track rod end first and then the loading on the swivels before looking to swap / referb your steering box.

Also have a look at the steering repeater (This is the bit with the big spring) as this will also cause loose steering.

Ps
Don't forget to make sure that all the bits are screwed down.
 
dun all that Clivees - ball joints replaced - looking from underneath - no movement on steering box arm, but rotational play in steering wheel

aint the big spring in the steering repeater mounted on the front chassis arm? ~Sorry Clivees - I missed that bit in your post.
I am talking about the box on the end of the steering column.
 
Dunt remember yer steering being bad when I drove the Dibnah & that wuz before yer dun yer track rod ends an' that.................Either that or mine's fekin appalling!

nah - not 90 - burrits deffo steering box wear. The steering wheel seems "loose" - about 10-20 degrees and i dont believe "they all do that".

i cud pop over and yu checkit if yu fancy one evernin now yu is only working part time ;)
 
I think that the MOT limit, for vehicles with a steering box, is 3" play either side of central before the wheels move. That's a hell of a lot - I would guess not far off 20 degrees.
 
i was thinkin it were normal to have vaige steerin as well until i got my second S3 which is totally solid in the steering department! :eek: maybee's i'v got the only one with decent steerin! :D
