steering box adjustment

I have tried to get the steering box centralised but can't find the marks referred to in Rave. Can anyone put me right on what I am looking for.

Best effort I am afraid, the UJ should have a indent/scollop from it and the box should have a hole/dimple....

You will need a mirror and torch. Marks are towards engine on back of box.

Gona check mime too as even running on 18" Hurricane my P38A still darts/tramlines especially on uneven surfaces - scary at times :-O

Thanks Wammers, I took it to a tyre company today who said they would sort it for me but they (like all experts) refused to listen. I even printed the page from RAVE but the insisted on locking the steering wheel in central position. So, I decided to get on and do myself.

V8HSE, tram lining is the reason I am trying to get mine done.

I run 19" wheels and run them at the stock pressure for the later rangies and mine doesn't tramline at all.

The problem of tyre companies is that they think they know best

One question to ask yourself is what type of vehicles do they see all day everday I bet they don't see many rangies

Well to be honest if everything is right and the steering components have not been changed that should be ok. BUT if the steering wheel has been off and not replaced correctly or the drag link has been changed not adjusted correctly then steering wheel set to suit that, it maybe wrong. Just follow the RAVE instructions. First thing is to get wheels straight ahead by driving car back and forth a few times on level ground letting it self centre. Then check the steering box, if it is out adjust drag link until marks line up then reset steering wheel. Wheel only goes on in 5 degree increments so if it is out you can adjust drag link slightly to get it central.

Thanks again Wammers. I have had the tracking adjusted but I dont think the steering wheel has been off. What I do know is that I had to get a Radius arm bush changed for the MOT and that the N/S/F tyre has 'toe and heel'? I also think the EAS has been messed with at some point and I have not been able to find a level flat surface to re-calibrate it. Something else I discovered yesterday, after owning the car for a year, is that the spare wheel does not match those on the car!!!. So looking for another 3 spoke P38 wheel.

going to tackle my tramlining P38 tomorrow... can't live with it anymore !

How do I remove steering wheel ?
names of components : drop link - connects shaft at bottom of steering box to front drag link ?
the steering rod at rear of axle - does it only adjust toe-in/out ?

Also I have an intermittent wooble when driving which at times, causes the front passenger seat to shake Any ideas as to the reason for this ?

you shouldnt need to remove steering wheel you should be able to center it with positioning of ujs in linkage track rod does toe in out ,drag link is used to center wheels after steering box is first centered ,if you center box ,then steering wheel by ujs,you can the use drag link to put steering wheel back to center which since both box an steering wheel were previous means its all centered,

Follow instructions in RAVE for removing and fitting steering wheel to the letter. If you need to do that. Drop arm, from sector shaft on steering box to drag link. Track rod behind axle only adjust toe in, toe out.

Thanks for prompt advice again Wammers and JamesMartin. Any ideas on whats causing the wobble / seat shaking saga ? ( wheels /tyres were all balanced couple of weeks ago)

Not a clue usually out of balance wheels. They need to be balanced statically and dynamically. When you do steering box alignment, road wheels MUST be straight ahead at all times. If box is out with wheels straight ahead, remove drag link from drop arm, turn steering wheel until box is in line then adjust drag link until it drops into drop arm. If you try to adjust drag link with it connected to steering box you may push wheels away from straight ahead position. That would defeat the object somewhat. Reason for centralising steering box is so both shuttle valves are in same position so there is equal pressure at either end of power steering piston and no bias one way or the other.

wheel wobble ,first things id look at is steering damper and tracking,if it was wheel brgs abs light would come on ,you can also check axle ,arm bushes /bolts etc

If you need them make sure you have spigot rings fitted. Any make sure they are still fitted - last time I had a wheel changed they lost one.

Problem found ! .......... drag link rod-end at left front wheel was shot/worn.... new drag link fitted... that's both drag link and trackrod replaced - driving like new now

Hi guys

On this subject i fitted new drag link and track rod for mot last week. I took them off, centered steering box (raised notch on outer back ring on box to mark on box) then refitted. I then had wheel alignment done.

Steering wheel is just off center, so can i just adjust drag link slightly to correct or will this affect the wheel alignment?

Also, i have not driven car much since getting it last year (long story involving head gaskets), but is turning circle pretty big on these, i mean, i turn wheel only a couple times max to full lock- just checking this is right

If it's just a little bit off centre then yes you can adjust with the drag link andthis will not affect your alignment.
Yes 2 and a bit turns is right .
