Hi Folks. I am rebuilding a series 2 front axle. I am using the original axle casing. But as I assemble I now have a choice of either Steering arms on top or on the bottom.
Is there advantage for which one i choose?
Is the part the arms attach to the same for steering on the top and on the bottom?
At this point it would be great if they are as it would be easy to simply swap the parts over.
Thanks Ian.

Series one's had arms on top,and so do some two's. The early two I owned did as well as other one parts [they just used what was left in the parts bin] Not sure when they switched to bottom arms but all 2a's I have seen have them that way.
If yours has arms on top I would put them back where they were. The top pin has spline's for the spring cone bearing which must be at the top.
If you want to fit later stronger lower arms you can fit the whole 2'a / 3 housing to your swivel balls.

Hi Folks.
Thank you for you reply. I decided to us the swivel arms at the top, choice, as per the original axle, using Railko bushes. it has all gone together very well.
this now leads to the next load of questions.
There are many different answers, but would like the best option.
1. Pre load of the steering arms without any brake parts fitted. Without swivel oil gaskets fitted at rear. using a spring balance?
2. Torque settings for king pins bottom and top?
3. Torque wrench setting for stub axle to swivel assembly?
many thanks Ian

If the arm was already fitted with a railco bush then a previous owner must have converted it from the early type spring cone bush.

Fortunately I had a second steering arms on top axle to make the best of the two. What do you reckon would be the correct preload on the swivel arms with rear oil seals removed?
