I've never seen this before! I think it's steam pouring from a downwards-pointing open pipe, which runs through a cut-out in the nearside bumper, so it must be an original pipe. Can it be air-con, although it was not switched on. Grateful for any ideas. Thanks.

it’s called a fuel burner heater

pre heats the engine , they normally come on when the temp falls below 5c

is working normally and nothing to worry about

Were either the FBH or PTCs part of some sort of options pack? I have an HSE auto which has everything on it except a heated front screen or either of the auxiliary heaters. My mate has an older SE with a heated screen (I don't know if he has either a FBH or PTC heater though). Which one is better btw?

I believe the HFW and FBH were part of a cold weather pack.

The FBH is better than the PCT, as it has a much higher thermal output. The FBH at full power has an output of about 4Kw. The PCT is about 500 watts. The FBH is a worthwhile retrofit, if you are that way inclined. ;)

I’ve got one and a set of matching hoses ready to add as a retrofit to mine. Ran of out time when it was warmer. So feeling quite envious reading the comments about how nice and warm the vehicle is to get into! Looks like we could all do with the heater for the next few days, with the current forecast.

I loved the remote I had on my D3 so much that when I went back to a FL1, I simply had to have one. I remotely active my FBH 30 minutes before leaving for work, if the outside temperature is below 5°C. This then has time to heat the engine to 75°C and run the blower fan to heat the interior too. So the car is warm, any ice is melted and the engine starts quickly without the glow plugs. Imho it's definitely worth the time it took to wire it up and the fuel it uses at warm the car up.
