No, cleaned the air intake last week (rinsing the mesh in white spirit and blown through) as well and checked hose, all good.

Its been running fine all week since swapping filter until today and done about 250 miles since rebuild. Pump timing with the belt is spot on, it seems to be right where it bolts to the timing case too.

When you bleed the fuel system with the hand pump, do you see any air bubbles emerging from the bleed screws?

Check the line between the fuel pump and lift pump carefully for leaks, they can let air in.

It sound like the injector pump is full of fuel, or it wouldn't start at all, but then air is getting into the low pressure side further back, and going into the pump. When you are absolutely sure there are no leaks, if it still wont start and run you maybe should try a known good lift pump for diagnostic purposes.

Bled it up to the filter earlier. A couple of air bubbles and after a couple of pumps got clear diesel. Once I get the thing into the garage where its light (using man power) I'll look at bleeding the injector pump again

SORTED!!

Bled up to the filter and cranked the engine over. Didnt seem to have fuel going through so connected the booster cables to the Golf and cranked over and she fired and carried on running till it got warm (about 15 mins or so).

Think the filter union was a little loose so let air in. Once bled it seemed fine

Pleased you got a result. Always pays to take your time when bleeding, to let any air bubbles in the filter housing and pipes rise to the top and come out.

Could well be there is no leak, if you have reassembled the whole fuel system it will take a long time for all the air to come out :)
