My 2003 facelift TD5 has always started first turn of the key, no need to really wait for glow plug light to go out, even in winter. Just get in turn the key and it's fired straight up.

Now it's started playing up :-( first thing in the morning or when left for a few hours, if I just turn the key it cranks but wont start... the only way to get it started is to keep it cranking on the starter for about 15-20 seconds with a bit of throttle, then it catches and runs fine.

Otherwise it's running fine, and starts straight away on the key when warm.

Any ideas ?

Replace the air bleed valve(WJN500110) in the rear wheel side port of the fuel filter head and if this doesnt help you should change the injector copper washers also check the ECU red plug and the upper plug which connects to the head and if you see oil replace the injectpr loom too
 
Hi, OK thanks for the help. I replaced the injector loom and cleaned out all the ECU & red plug about 15,000 miles ago, so hopefully that should be OK. I was thinking injector washers after reading a few other posts, but I'll look at the fuel filer air bleed first.

No, you have to unscrew the rear outer port and put in the new one cos the part comes complete, google out the p/n and you'll figure it out... the hose's conector has tabs on the sides which you have to squeeze to release it from the port
 
OK thanks... one thing that may or may not be relevant.... it seems that if I switch it to the on position so that you can hear the fuel pump priming, then off and on again about three or four times before trying to start it, it fires up much easier ??
I only noticed this by accident when listening to the fuel pump... only done it twice so it could be a red herring, I need to check if it's definitely the case.

that would indicate there are gasses in the fuel system needing time to be bled out
 
OK I have some more information :) I noticed today that when I returned from a drive out, the fuel pump was still running, and seems to be making a noise like a swarm of bees, buzzing and gurgling from by the fuel filter /tank. If I stop the car and then just turn on the key, the pump seems to run like this for about 1-2 minutes then stops. The pitch of the noise changes higher and lower, definitely sounds like there's air pumping around.

The car drives fine & idles smoothly otherwise.

Is it likely to stop on me whilst driving until I get it fixed ? or just give me starting problems ?

you want to be getting it sorted sooner than later,it could let you down on the road
 
Change than fuel filter dude, and do the purge proceedure if not that then air is getting in sonewhere
 
Fixed today :)_ Replaced the fuel filter and air bleed valve, purged the air out and it now sounds great, no more whining & gurgling from the fuel pump. It whirs for about 20 secs then stops when the pressure builds up. When the engine's running I can't hear the pump at all.

I suspect that I let it run low on fuel a couple of weeks ago, and air got into the pump, then couldn't get out as the air bleed was blocked ?
