Sounds like James Martin points to:
Fuel starvation.
Check simples first like all filters and pump performance. Fuel flow as breathers to tank could be blocked. Fuel stoppers like any kind of stop valve. Water catchers and as a last does the flow from bottom filter look full and strong.
Now that's basic diesel stiff and hides most issues.
Next get into injector blow back ect.

Take Sierraferrys advice and tell them to change the washers!
So they have already charged you for a few hours work and NOT even tried to fix it!
This is the reason I HATE garages! They think they know best, then they get all offended when you tell them they are wrong, they find problems in other areas just to try to prove themselves right.
I would begin to doubt they are even capable of doing the injector seals!
My sisters Fender came back from a main dealer after repairs to the damage after it was stolen, the list of things that didnt work AFTER they fixed it was longer than the original work needed!
Mark
EDIT . Yes they should check the fuel pump pressure as well!

The flow at the td5's filter is not strong at all, took me many minutes to fill a 5l can to help out somebody who remained empty, the filter is only on the return and LP circuit around 30l/hour flow there... as the car was in a garage the simplest way would have been to measure pressure at the FPR to diagnose it, HP fuel delivery to the head is not restricted by anything it comes directly from the pump to the FPR but if there's a compression leak through the injector copper washers combustion gas will get into the fuel circuit and the symptoms are as they were described, it can be seen in the pic what happens there

green = fuel return
red = fuel supply
blue = compression/combustion gas

Thanks for all your help people, got the old girl back today seems to be running ok after injector seals, loom and fuel pump replacement.
Can't pinpoint exactly which one caused the problem but as per Sierrafery my money is on the washers.
One small point, oil has a very slight whiff of diesel although level is the same as it was.
I'm guessing that even after disconnecting the FPR etc there is going to be a bit of fuel lying around which is going to find its way into the engine when taking out the injectors?
Advice as always much appreciated to try and give something back I have VCDS for any Audi/Seat/VW/Skoda owners with problems in the Cambs area and also am an expert on the G-Lader engined VW cars of the 90's particularly the Rallye Golf.

Cheers

were the washers and o-rings genuine?... diesel in oil can get only through the orings and pattern ones are sh*T, better keep the old pump as a spare cos it is good i'm sure

All genuine parts mate, have only driven it 3 miles since collecting it.
It is only a whiff of diesel and as I said oil level not risen so hopefully not a problem?
Cheers,

Ummmm, can I slip in a comment here? Not that I am an expert on this but I have just had a problem with a lot of similarities where initially mine was fine below 2000rpm but there was nothing above...this then went to lumpy running and eventually gave up altogether.

This taken with your comment about oil in the ECU, could you have an oiled up injector loom? I actually had that as well as an intermittent fuel pump which eventually quit

Leomas, garage changed injector seals, loom and fuel pump so neither of us have any idea which was actually responsible although I think injector seals as per the learned members on this forum:)

I intend to change the oil now anyway, could someone please direct me to the sump plug location?

There are two round holes in the plastic undertray where I guess there should be inserts, is the sump plug above one of them?
Is it a bolt head or a hex insert same as gearbox drain?
Cheers as always.

Oh well, changed the oil last Thursday although not the filter. Here we are Tuesday and it smells of diesel again. Totally peed off now as having already spent a Grand I'm guessing the head is knackered. The strange thing is that all the work already done has got her running perfectly again, starts first time every time and runs as well as she ever did. Anyone fancy replacing the head for 500 quid?
