Two times in the last couple of weeks it happened that I just heard a "clic" when I tried to start the car, the first time it was just 1 clic and at the 2nd attempt the starter "took", today it said two times "clic" and at the 3rd attempt the starter took and started the car immediately. Guess my starter is on its way ? I already WD40'ed the spade contact on the starter.

"Water Dispersant #40". Despite what people think this is neither a lubricant nor an electrical contact cleaner. It leaves an oily residue which happens to serve as lubricant purely as a side effect. Said residue is also great for gumming up with grime or causing a short circuit if used on anything electric.
Tap the starter with a hammer. If it now starts normally a few times then your solenoid is fine and you need to refurb/replace the starter. The brushes / contacts are worn or the bearing is sticking. If nothing changes then james is right, its the solenoid.
Thanks for the answers. Problem is that this doesn't happen all the time, between the 1st time and today there were a couple of good starts. Also this afternoon on my way back home it started normally after the clic when I left?

Had this same sounding snag on my TD4 manual.
Would start instantly, then next start take several clicks before successfully starting, next start would be instant, etc......
Got solenoid repair kit off ebay, about a tenner, and that cured it!
Solenoid repair was dead easy, getting starter off not so easy.....but not impossible!

Had the same problem on our old TD5 Disco and it was worn contacts inside the solenoid.

A new one since two weeks.
That gave ""clack" "clack" noises, which was allok after battery was replaced. Now it is "clic" "clic".

checked the new batterys voltage? Maybe its faulty!

Just had a look at the battery, it gives 12.66V with engine not running, with engine running the voltage oscilates between 14.57V and 14.65V. Seems ok to me ?

Hi I have had this problem it was definitly the solinoid easy to do take battery and battery holder of because underneith is a stud that goes through to the starter (3 in all) but one under battery if you feel undernieth where the turbo hose is above the gearbox and you will feel a couple of bolts it is the one at the top once you have done that undo the other 2 on the starter motor side and undo the wires probably best before you undo the last 2 studs and all this can be done from the top follow the instruction the ebay items tell you then put it all back on and you are done hope this helps

What ebay items (with instructions) does one order to fix this ? I asked today at the guy of the gasstation, while tanking, if he could do fix this kind of problems, he said yes, but I have a waitinglist of 3 weeks he said. Imagin the starter begins to fail seriously I'd have to wait 3 weeks before he could have a look at it. So if these solenoid parts are available on ebay and there are instructions to it as well, even better if there are, I'd might think of trying to do it myself.

Job was done from the top!
Mine is a manual, and I do believe the auto is more tricky - my biggest problem was a tight bolt, a worn socket and a long extention bar that started to round bolt head!! Obtained a new socket that drives on the flats of the bolt head rather than corners and all was fine!
Instructions on the solenoid repair kit are quite comprehensive and easy to follow.
I also went down the replacing the battery first route as this was easiest!
Mine was clicking then starting for about two/three weeks, always started eventually......fortunately!
