Hi all,

I was presented with a new problem tonight. I went to start up the landy and the starter motor stays engaged, but by engaged I mean it's powered all the time. So the solenoid must be stuck closed. Strange thing is though when you reconnect the battery it's disengaged until you try restarting it again. I would have thought if it was stuck it would start up as soon as the battery is connected. Any ideas?

Its not a landy engine it's a perkins 4.203 not sure if it has similar/ same starter.

I was frantically trying to rip the battery terminal off while the thing was cranking tonight. It cranked the battery flat and melted a negative wire before i got the terminal off though. I only had a large set of pipe grips available. Too large to get on a 13mm nut.

Are you sure the solenoid is faulty? Sounds like a faulty relay to me.... the relay feeding the solenoid could be dodgy perhaps?

Is the relay and solenoid part of the same thing? The started has a solenoid mounted on the body of the starter. An all in one unit as it were. Can you rebuild them/ get them to bits?

Could well be a preengage starter/solenoid. The solenoid is in the starter and energises the motor and pushes the starter cog into the starter ring. Once the engine starts it turns the engine faster than the starter and flings the starter cog out. Sounds like something is sticking until the engine stops and the return spring can disengage the starter. Probably a starter motor overhaul/replace job.

Well I went out to pull the starter off today to have a look at it and I couldn't replicate the problem. Tried about 6 restarts and it works fine. I did tap it a bit before I tried it for the first time.
Oxides It was more that the starter was constantly powered rather than not disengaging. Because its a diesel I was able to pull the stop cable and take the key out but the starter kept cranking until I ripped the terminal off.
