Starter self-fix

Hey everyone - This one's for the auto electricians i think!

I had my starter reconditioned 6 months ago and its packed up again! i removed it, opened it and found that one of the little Brass bits had completely disintegrated into pieces.

1. Does anyone know if these are replaceable in singles or would i need to buy a whole set?

2. The starter looks filthy to me! (For an electrical part) Its full of black sludge which i would imagine should not be there? Just looking for clarity on that?

3. In the 2nd picture one can see that the copper 'ring'/'collar' in the pic is fairly worn, in fact it has some hairline cracks in it. Is this normal or will this starter need replacement? Bearing in mind that out in South africa starters aren't as cheap as in the UK.

I hate to say this but it looks Fubar , try a new brush pack , should sort the issue , after a good cleaning !!

For reconditioned doesn't look great

£100 on a new one probably a wise investment, albeit a new brush kit might get it working - that said, have to question why it only lasted 6 months!

I went to my local Auto electrics supply store and they say they can only replace the entire 'brush holder' (which i assume is the 'brush kit' that you refer to). This will cost me R900! (+-£80)

I'm sure there must be a more affordable fix for this!?

Also they say the armature is broken and needs replacing. Then they offered me a replacement starter for R1900 (+-£180). I feel they're just trying to take ,me for a ride but I'm open to second opinions.

Also! I need this vehicle for commuting! Is it unwise to run the vehicle without the starter motor in place? (Push starting ofcourse!)

Only risk of running without starter in place is crap getting in where it shouldn't
