If it helps, Entropy, when I first did mine it was a total PITA. In the end I took out the centre cross member, dropped the gearbox a little (watch the front of the engine tilting up doesn't damage anything!) so with a really long extension I could reach over the top of the gearbox and undo the 2 bolts. Took me hours.

But do check the ring gear and the condition of the teeth on the starter motor. A garage fitted a new starter to a mates 38, lasted a couple of weeks, the ring gear was fecked. Not saying yours is the same, Wammers sounds the most plausible diagnosis, just check.;):)

In the starter there is a pivet point where solinod pulls the forked arm to engage the teeth the pivet fails ,so solinoid switches on but the cog doint engage all the way

A now well it happened once on think was a rover sd1 ,,the pivit bit was like a rubber block and it stopprd doing its job starter still did its job but zinged when it didnt and the teeth didnt engage/ worked fine on the bench .it was no easy to find the fault if it helps

No rubber block on this starter, pivots are two sets of metal pins, unlikely both pins on either set have broken at same time. No zinging as you put it. So my bet is still failed sprag clutch.

Thanks guys I think I will go down the replace route and check the teeth when out. However need to identify cause of coolant leak as highest priority.

The car starts every time just occasionally (guess its about once every 2 weeks) it won't start on a couple of attempts.

If your coolant leak is from the favourite place. The C shaped hose at the rear of the head then it is possible that coolant has got into the sprag clutch and that is causing your problems.

its running down on the drivers side near to where the steering damper is attached. Sorry thats the best description I have.
Water pump or O'ring on metal pipe that goes into the block at the front just below the thermostat housing and then along head to feed heater. Or the thermostat housing itself.

And I would just replace starter. They are not TOO expensive and such a PITA to get out and when you have spent hours getting to it in the first place may as well put in a new one whilst you can remember how to get to it
