Hi all
A couple of weeks ago having had an off and on starting prob with my DI ,the alternater belt then came off, we all thought that maybe a slack belt had not been charging the battery quite enough hense the intermitant starting prob, all seemed to be fine since replacing the belt, until this morning.... all the lights come on as you turn the key but nothing else not a click not an attempt to start , after half an hour this morning trying off and on it then started like nothing was wrong, drove to where I needed to go , parked up for 3 hours then the same prob again..could this be the starter motor, ingnition switch probs...can you give me some idea where would you start to look please.... so I can give ..he whos never obeyed some idea when he gets home from work?

Thank you

Lou

Ignition switch faults are becoming more common as these Land Rovers get older. Use a 12v test lamp or voltmeter at the starter motor solenoid actuating cable (the thinnest cable) each time the key is turned to the cranking position voltage should be registered, if so, then the ignition switch is probably ok. If tapping the solenoid whilst the key is turned brings the starter motor to life then you can have the starter repaired or replaced.

Safety:please be aware that the engine may start during these tests.

The solenoid contatcs are known to burn out, I had the same problem. But in this case you do hear the click of the input shaft engaging into the flywheel. The other thing to check is the feed wire to the solenoid, which is a Faston style spade connector. Make sure that is secured properly also.

Hi
went and got a new ignition switch, tryed that and nothing, my other half then tested the power was going to the starter motor which it was but the connector looked pretty corroded, pushed it back on gave it a good wiggle and the landy started, so hes given it a spray with something( lol sorry Im a girl) and I now know what to wiggle if it wont start, he says its a really short bit of cable so will have to be replaced if need be coz theres not enough cable to sort out as it is........ been lots of muttering about cars and women.. cant live with um cant live without um! lol could be worse

Lou

Oh well, at least you can discount ignition switch failure as being a problem to face in the near future.:D

Glad you are on the case now. It sounds like it can easily be fixed.

Best of luck.
