Help needed with what I think is a failing starter motor.

I have 1989 2.5 petrol engine 90. Has a new battery and good output from alternator but I have trouble starting. Ignition seems fine, I live on a hill and will easily bump start as soon as the clutch engages. Also cleaned both battery and engine earthing wires.

But ... with voltmeter accross battery terminal the voltage drops to 10 (sometimes as low as 8) volts when engaging started. It seems the hotter it gets the greater the voltage drop.

Is this an acceptable voltage drop on starting.

I think not but am not realy sure and would welcome some advice before I buy another starter motor (the one I have is not yet 2 years old but unfortunately it is the type which does not come apart to inspect and repair)

thanks ..... Richard

Mad Hat Man .... thanks for quick reply, just after I made posting i realised I should have said that I have cleaned and check the main battery earth cable and replace the engine earth with new (had one knocking about) so I am stuck with the conclusion that my 18 month replica starter from "well known landrover parts supplier" is rubbish. Before spending £60 for another cheap Indian Lucas replica I need as much help as I can get .... thanks again Richard

Take it off, strip it down and clean it, might help. Certainly gets a lot of starters going and in some cases can give them years of life.
