unlikely to be starter staying engaged i would put money on the ignition, not that hard wee bit fiddly

Just took steering cowl off and had a look.
I separated the switch from the barrel and tested the movement, moving into place and the spring return seemed strong. Battery disconnected i should say.
key moves freely in ignition.
But must agree with you it has to be ignition switch.
Can you replace just the switch keeping same barrel and key?
Or best to replace it all?

dont know never pulled one apart just swapped one because i lost my keys try testing it with a meter

The saga continues;
Replaced ignition switch, complete with barrel and lock with a new one.
Starts fine but on most attempts starter still not disengaged.
Until that is i open a door or mess around with door buttons????
Then it disengages!!!
Remembering central locking failed at the time this problem started i took the blade fuse out for the central locking and she starts and stops fine 8 times in a row.
Cup of coffee and a head scratch later i tried again.....same thing.
starts and motor stays engaged until you open doors etc.
Bad earth? checked one on the starter motor and it looked clean and solid.
So back to the lz archives for more inspiration and answers.
Any help or advice gratefully received.

any door ,does central locking buttons effect it with fuse out ?, have you tried bypassing starter relay
Yes any door. central locking not working but seems manual pushing of buttons doesn,t have any effect.
Where would i find starter relay?
Was going to run a switched wire from switch live on solenoid direct to battery and see if that made a difference. but assumed it wouldn,t as i know the ignition switch is good.

passenger footwell iirc ,you coul pull relay out and make a link wire to link live terminal when key turned to solenoid out put
Thanks. will try that.
Am i right in thinking that if i attach a jump lead between negative battery terminal and starter this would show a bad earth connection there?
As in it works ok while attached.

UPDATE
Fault now found. At some point prior to owning the glow plug relay had lost its earth so a bridge wire was taken from the crank position on the ignition. The starter motor not disengaging started when another earth wire behind fuse box worked loose. This then caused the short. Opening the doors and interior light coming on created an earth allowing the starter to disengage.
Not sure i understand that  but that's what spa vehicle electrics told me.
Earth wire refitted, glow plug relay earth properly connected and problem solved.

Still no central locking though:(

Many thanks to lz for info on replacing starter and ignition switch and to members helpful replies.
