Hi ..my stater motor is just spinning and not turning the engine over .. but if i put in gear and turn the key it will turn the engine over and move the car forward or back depending on what gear i chosen ... i've taken the stater motor out and tested to see if the little cog flys forward and spins which it does ... any pointer as to what is wrong?

How bizarre. It sounds like the flywheel is disconnected from the crankshaft, but that would unlikely. I don't think dual mass flywheels were fitted to early Freelanders. I could be wrong though.

Thats wrong how would it move when in gear if fly wheel is loose???

Gearbox input shaft goes into the clutch, clutch is bolted to the flywheel. starter turns the flywheel and in turn, turns the gearbox, giving drive.

Flywheel is connected to gearbox via the clutch until the clutch pedal is pressed and disconnected. If the flywheel had become disconnected from the crankshaft the gearbox can be driven by the starter motor and not turn the engine over.

his flywheel is veryunlikey to be disconnected whether dual mass or std ,new starter i should think ,clutch for starter dog

I did say it was unlikely. Starter sounds fine as it will move when in gear. Dogfox hasn't mentioned if he has carried out any checks himself. If the engine is actually turning over I'd agree with 3.5 efi and say timing belt. Probably the easiest way to check would be to take the dizzy cap off and watch the rotor arm while someone else turns the key.

Sounds like only the first stage of the starter motor is coming in, The starter should turn slowly until the starter dog is engaged in the flywheel ring gear then the solenoid should provide full power to the starter. If the engine runs OK can't see it being the timing belt.
will a failed head gasket have these symtons ?... just had a look at the timing and belt is in tact ... but then i noticed the water expansion bottle was empty and tried topping it up but the water was just dissapearing ... then checked the dip stick and it had a mixure of water and oil .. can not turn the engine over just yet due to a flat bettery

But the vehicle is moving on the starter when in gear. Cambelt or headgasket failure springs to mind.

Yes. It sounds like your vehicle has no compression. Why not get someone to crank the starter motor over while you watch the timing belt or camshaft. If it's going around then yer engine is FUBAR'd.
