That doesn't sound like a starter motor problem. Sounds like the engine is taking a while to fire. Does it run ok once it fires? Does the starter turn the engine over quite fast or is it laboured?

Don't really get this bit either.
Or do you mean the solenoid engages the starter, but the engine does not turn over for a second or two after you turn the key and hear the starter engage

The starter will turn as soon as you turn the key as it should but when you would normally let go of the key once its fired it stalls, you have to keep to starter running with the engine until its ready to go on its own after throttle input.

Hmmm, know nowt about the EDC ones apart from the fact they have a few more horses to cope with the auto box, IIRC. I wonder if the EDC unit is taking a second or so too long to open the stop solenoid. I'm presuming here that the EDC unit controls that, rather than a straight live feed from the ignition as in the standard 300Tdi. Other than that I'd be wondering when the fuel filter was last changed or lift pump. Or, small leak in fuel pipe that's allowing air in and taking a second or two to get fuel through after been sat for a while.

You might just have a sticky stop solenoid then, marra. IIRC they can get a bit of cr@p in them which can cause them problems opening and shutting or even keeping them shut/open. I think you can unscrew them and give them a clean.

Great thanks. I was hoping it would be simpleI will take the starter out and give it a good clean I think and maybe replace the solenoid to be sure.
That's not what I'm saying, Delwyn. I think your starter motor and starter solenoid are ok. I suspect that your fuel shut off solenoid may be a bit slow to react. Possibly because there is some gunk in there stopping it sliding back and forth. That's just my best guess though!

Sounds like your starter is engaging and turning over vigorously as it should. So, if it's taking a while to start then I'd start thinking fuel supply. You want a recently changed fuel and air filter, so that you can rule them out of interfering with getting good combustion. Then there's delivery of fuel from lift pump, then if the fuel supply is being opened by the stop/shut off solenoid. You could take the solenoid out and try putting 12v across it. 12v live to terminal and an earth/negative to the solenoid body. That way you could switch it off and on and see how quick it is to react. Also, this will give you a chance to see if there is any gunk around the plunger slowing it's movement. If it is stop solenoid related, hopefully it's not an issue with the EDC unit controlling it, cos that sounds like it will be a pain. Hopefully, someone with 300Tdi EDC experience will chip in to this thread.Ah ok sorry I thought you meant the starter solenoid

Don't know, mate. My stop solenoid just has one wire to it. The live wire. It's earthed through the body of the valve. What three wires are you on about?

Ha, ha. If it's just the stop solenoid needing a clean, it'll be a simple fix. Good luck with it
