Hi Chappies and Chappesses.

Some might remember that daughter has a series 111, fabulous little Dotty. Dotty has been for unseen reasons sorned on our drive for quite a few months and now it's time to send her to someone whose going to be able to love her and enable daughter to build her house deposit for her first home.
We are having trouble starting her. We have put a new starter motor in, new plugs, checked the connectors using that arcing advise from an earlier thread etc. Put petrol in.
Now she started up great and we ran her for 5 mins or so. There was a bit of puffing and the neighbours had their washing out so stopped her whilst we grabbed daughter to show her our hard work.... then nothing. We fitted a newThe starter motor is whirring but that's it. We have tried moving her a bit but, nothing. New solenoid and still nothing.

Any ideas where we can go next?
 
Apart from checking that the battery is tip top, there isn't much else I can recommend. It could be that the new starter is duff, it's not unheard of for replacement starters on series to be useless straight out of the box. It sounds like it's spinning but the bendix isn't throwing the engagement cog out to mesh with the flywheel. Can you try jump starting it.

Yeah we've tried to jump it but because of location we can't bump it. So frustrating because she has never ever failed to fire up. It has been I'll admit our own fault for not turning her over every now and then. Looking at some other threads, some have mentioned an earthing problem?

Ok. Better half had a ball ache of a time trying to get the old starter motor out ( rounding nuts and us not having a ramp) took him about four days and lots of swearing and ibroprophen for his elbows. Lol. He said he'll give that a go tomorrow if shouting at it , which he is doing now, doesn't work.
 
Could be a dodgy earth or even the power cable to the starter but usually if that's the case, you don't get the whirring noise. Try attaching a jump lead from the negative terminal of the battery to somewhere clean on the engine. If it starts that means a bad earth.

I know, It took me ages to summon up the energy to do mine, it's a right pig.

if it is whirring it sounds as if starter gear is not sliding in on the bendix to engage flywheel remove starter and clean it up
