So work has started on smooth surfacing this lane at a cost of £250,000.

This it seems has come after a legal threat of action against Derbyshire county council because of the natural condition of the track.

So now one of the most exciting and technical lanes in the region becomes a mobility scooter friendly road.

I'm sure it'll carry on featuring in many a guides roadbook from now on.....of course not.

But the worrying thing seems to be the source of the legal threat is basically unknown.
Anti 4x4 groups it is alleged, speculate that it is a person seeking an easier passage over the route.

It stinks of foul play, and i wouldn't be surprised if it is born from the bobbles in a move to lessen the usage by 4x4.

So will it set a precedent on other lanes? if you can't get them TRO'd, then resurface them and the 4x4's will move on.

Remains to be seen....

Let's hope it stays in the peaks and other councils, don't pick up on it.

Why would 4x4 move on? If it makes it easier to enjoy the views and scenary of the area, I suspect that one type of 4x4 driver will be replaced by another. In fact, if the surface is too good, the bobblies will find themselves caught in traffic from every style of vehicle taking in the sights!

That's quite a good point. So if it is a tactic to disuade 4x4's then they might find it could encourage a wealth of soft roaders and increase traffic over the lane.

Be a waste of time if they thought it would dissuade 4x4s. In my experience there are as many soft laners and drivers out for the view as there are mudpluggers and winch jockies. There is also a risk that a better surface will "encourage" some users to travel faster and more dangerously...

Sounds like they are pandering to the stereotypes presented by some folks, that 4x4 drivers are only interested in tearing up muddy lanes...

Was up in the lakes recently and a few of the greats, inc Stile End, are having a very similar extensive resurfacing job. Stile end case in point they are hitting a new route into the hillside, serious work!

Will be a breeze to drive now!

There must be a reason for spending this kind of money on resurfacing greenlanes.

Not wanting to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it does seem a tad sinister.

I ran up stile end as we didn't want to drive the gate that said road closed.

After about ten minutes puffing and panting, I reached the old rocky section that was awesome.

The scale of the work undertaken was almost unbelieveable, again must have cost hundreds of thousands to resurface.

It was earth and hardcore over the bedrock, then a hand laid track, basically a dry stone wall kinda laid track, hand paved in small rocks sorta thing, then filled with sandy/cement mix to make a fairly smooth surface, but where the really has section was they have cut a new route to the left into the hillside.

I mean, could cost half a million quid by the time the whole track is finished.

At the time, what with the brand new and very high quality gates and fences everywhere, and the extensive and beautiful repairs to the dry stone walling, I did think it was VERY odd.

Some half baked attempt to discourage the naughty 4x4 bobtail types.

But as has been said before, it'll possibly encourage more of the soft laners and increase traffic.

Or even some health and safety waffle on vehicles not being wrapped in cotton wool and failing off the lane scenario.

lets just hope mother nature takes back what is hers when it comes to stanage, they can do all they like but once water has found a way it will start to wash out what they have put down, not right away mind but i bet i dont look like anything like in 12 mnths time!

I have an idea to take the mountain bike and ride it, maybe stop and kick at a few rocks, see what it's 'really' like ..
