Stained bumper

I think Diesel Do used raptor paint on his bumpers and arches, the same stuff that's on the back of pickup trucks. Not sure how easy it is to prep for it or how long it will last but it looked good. You could also try looking for a replacement set of plastics from an 02 car in a scrappy.

Well I tried shoe polish but it really didn't cut it. I don't want to spend a fortune on this and I will possibly try the Carplan paint but overnight the cheapest has doubled in price.
Here is what it looks like using back to black. The staining has certainly gone from view but for how long.

looks good, but like u say can't always tell from a pic

would the heat gun be any good, but thinking ur bumpers and trim are grey arnt they

the autoglym stuff is very good but unfortunatly expensive

wonder if Linseed oil would be any good, but imagine it wouldn't take very long to come off

suppose if u bought black trim second hand u don't know what condition it's in , unless u use the black paint

when I first looked in halfords most of the solutions are 5-7 quid upwards

know it's extreme but would a garage spray all the trim black for u , but imagine it would be well over 100 quid, but permanent

regarding cost and something that's the most effective just wondering if the black spray paint might be the best solution as ur trim is grey ???

I think you have pretty much got it sussed Gary.
The trim is actually grey and I think black works better (not always but in this case) against the red but even more now I have black wheels and a black top. TBH I would have left it if it wasn't for the staining. I like the idea of the heat gun but if I am going to do anything I might as well go from grey to black and the heat gun will not give me that. Also I am not wanting to spend a lot on this. I should be known as Mr. Quickfix.

I am sure the back to black will wear off sooner or later but it has shown me how much better black is than grey. Pic is a bit blurred.

Sooooo it looks like I need to paint the lot and it looks like I need the Carplan satin that was linked earlier but is now sold out. Also I think gloss would be too overbearingly black. I have seen gloss black on a few FLs' plastic and it is to garish and gawdy for me.

I sprayed my spare wheel holder with stone chip paint and it looks great. A nice satin/matt finish and more like dark grey than black which would be similar to the original black trim. It would take a hell of a lot of work to remove any traces of polish before applying and you might need a special plastic undercoat first but the paint is fairly cheap in Eurocarparts, especially if you wait for one of their 30% off days.

was just thinking how effective going from grey to black the car plan would be , by using stains or polishes etc

maybe getting some cheap Matt black, agree also what ur saying gloss doesn't look right

could remove the trims , so that u could do it in stages , but know it can be a pig , ref rusted bolts etc

if u look on Amazon or eBay and type in black plastic dye quite a few options should come up

does look good what you've done, but as always how long will it last , seeing ur also changing a colour from grey to black

so really at the end of the day , if u bought second hand trim its a permanent black and could use a hot hair gun prior to fitting new trim , might not have to do it

but when buying off line don't know how good it is

I bought another dashboard for mine as it had a great big scratch across it and drove me insane , so as I had to replace my heater matrix and as the dashboard had to come out and wished to fit my spot and fog light wiring loom , bit the bullet and replaced the whole dashboard at the same time

isn't for the faint hearted though , lol

I forgot to say I used carplan black polish on wing mirrors which had gone grey and it lasted really well. I only had to redo it every couple of months or so.

Very brave to do a dashboard......they are so complex these days compared to my Ford Anglia Days.
I did a lot of searches to find a plastic solution and none seemed to appeal to me which is why I eventually put the question on here about staining.

must admit did like the car plan stuff , but then used the back to black

bit more expensive , but seems a paint may be better to go from grey to black so it's permanent

that's good fun rubbing the spare wheel holder down ,

I used the Hammerite smooth , also using it for my rear drum brakes , is still on there after a couple of years

bought the brush on type , could then build up thin layers on the wheel bracket and drums

used it as well on the fuel pump metal brackets

I always use Hammerite Underseal with Waxoyl for spare wheel carriers - takes a while to dry but really lasts - which is the same sort of thing. I had steel bumpers on my SJ413 that eventually needed a coating and once done it lasted ages (like years and years) and was so simple to touch up when needed. I don't think this is in the same league though which is why - if I keep the car - I will get the Carplan satin for the plastic. I just know that once I get the pressure washer on the bumpers the back to black is going to come off.
Life should be so simple.

I love Hammerite paint but for some areas it needs to be more chip proof. When dry HUS&W it is really rock hard.

Good point because my door mirrors are actually black which is another reason to get the bumpers done.

In my opinion, if you want black bumpers, probably best to replace with the '02 onward black bumpers

I'll be reapplying the autoglym stuff to my Hippo's bumpers. I think the more times you add it, the longer it lasts (certainly the case on the black trims on my MGF)

Oh, and FWIW, I think the current grey bumpers look good with your red car and black wheels

Hehehehe.............oh dear more to consider. TBH the black is more charcoal colour right this minute. If they were not stained I'd stick with grey but if I am going to put some slap on it then I think black but if I could get charcoal maybe!

. I do think they look sharper or more attractive in black.
